Routing MIDI Notes to Different Synth

  • Synths (especially if they are running and not idle) take up CPU, some more than others
  • BUT... I want to use different synths in different parts a song (one synth in the verse and a different one in the chorus, etc)
  • I am using MIDI Guitar 2 to convert audio notes to MIDI Notes

SooOOoooo.... I want to selectively or conditionally ROUTE the MIDI Notes coming from MIDI Guitae 2 ...to a specific synth. Conceptually like.... I turn a step dial for Synth 1 and the MIDI Notes coming from MIDI Guitar 2 will ONLY go or be routed to Synth 1, and no other synth is being used or processing MIDI notes (aka.... the other synths not in use are idle and not consuming much CPU)

OBJECTIVE: I want 8 (or more) different synths in my template, which I will use at various times; however I only want or selectively want to use ONE of them at one time. I do not want all them "running" or processing MIDI Notes at the same time::: way too much CPU. REMEMBER that using "one synth at one time", may mean a synth in the verse, and a different synth in the chorus or bridge.

How.... can I selectively "route" or use one specific synth, and assure the others are idle, and not chewing up CPU? Some of the Moog synths are both AMAZING, and at the same time amazingly CPU hungry. I want to selectively use or have a (singular) synth processing MIDI notes and producing sound; and the other synths not in use to be idle or off.

PLEASE do not recommend sending MIDI to all of them, and MUTING the output of the synths that I don't want to use. This approach does NOTHING to reduce the CPU usage of 8 or more synth plugins.

Do ALL synths allow you to select which MIDI channel it receives on?

When creating an Audio Unit Input; for a synth plugin, is there a way to specify which MIDI channels it can or cannot receive on?

I thought "perhaps" restricting each synth to a singular MIDI channels, might allow selective MIDI routing; and thus selecting which specific synth is processing or "playing" MIDI notes at one time, and assure all the other synths are not.

Thanks!!!

  • @Vmusic : see my response to your similar post on Facebook. The synth routing trick I should you does not use a lot of resources as all the synths besides the target are idled.

In 2.0, there will be a streamlined way of accomplishing this.

Another method you can use is setting the midi filter of each synth to a different channel and changing the midi channel your controller sends. You would still need to set up muting like the synth switching example in order to idle unused synths.

  • The synth routing switch technique mentioned above is described at https://wiki.loopypro.com/Synth_Routing_Switch
