Apple rumblings: The demise of the USB-C port?

I didn't read too deeply, but there have been some articles indicating that Apple is considering removing the USB-C port from future iPhones. I don't know if there's been a mention of the same happening to the iPad. E-Musicians could probably adjust except for Bluetooth latency... Any thoughts?

  • Would there be any way of connecting an audio interface? Maybe through the “smart connector”?

  • I hope not.

  • that makes no sense.. i guess it's just hoax, wireless charging is almost unusable

  • To me this looks like they considered it for some types of iPhone but not as a generic direction that affects all devices: https://9to5mac.com/2025/03/16/iphone-17-air-no-port-gurman-report/

  • This would be a terrible decision.

  • I guess the main focus will be on MagSafe (25W wireless fast-charging work quite nicely on my iPhone 16) which allows me to use the usb-c port for other things while and keeping the device charged.

There are more annoying things on the iPhones than charging though, the 'sample-rate issues' are even worse, hook a headset (for monitoring) and the device auto-switches to 44.1k, disconnect it and it's back at 48k and even video gets recorded sometimes recorded 44.1k audio which makes it pretty interesting trying to keep everything in sync...

  • I doubt this is accurate.

They only added usb c to some classes of device such as iphone in the first place because of EU etc legislation designed to reduce the amount of chargers that go into landfill. Left entirely to their own devices they wanted to maintain lightning for iphones. Even without legislation, ipads were a more complex equation for them, especially pro class devices where usb c functionality was deemed a marketable feature.

  • And there’s us thinking that the removal of 3.5mm jack was the worst that could happen 🙄

    Welcome to the future

Too many people opting not to buy cheap headphone adapters rather than Air Pod Pros.

This sounds accurate and logical only because i got my first usb-c Apple device this year, so this aligns with the unlucky timing I’ve always had when upgrading.

Hope not; but it’s doubtful as it is the standard for power and data at high rates of recharging and data transmission…at the same time they never should’ve abandoned lightning ports. I love those things . Clean and reliable

Although amusing, I seriously cannot see this happening.

USB-C receptacles are definitely harder to clean, I wish Lighting had become a standard

Lightning ports are just as difficult to clean if you ask me. Plus they require a proprietary chip.

Really? I’m always afraid of breaking the “lip” in the middle, but maybe I’m just being too cautious. I hadn’t considered that maybe USB-C collects less lint due to being tighter, I swear at this point I’ve pulled like a whole cat out of Lightning ports. And yeah, I’m aware that it didn’t have a true chance of becoming a standard, I just liked the feel of the plug mostly.

Apple…please just bring us back our button. This swiping bullshit is always in the way right on the keyboard when i have a synth open or something. Double click done. It was so easy…

  • Give us latency-free AirPod Pros and I'm not as disgusted. Otherwise, no thanks.

I think they got rid of the Home/thumbprint reader button because of excessive wear, but I preferred it also.

  • I hope that removal of ports does not come to pass, but it really wouldn't surprise me. Good way to force users to use cloud services, which means extra $$$. More than enough extra bucks, over a user's lifetime, to compensate for the loss of sales of cables and chargers. They got rid of the headphone jack so they could sell more airpods, without concern for the havoc it would wreak on mobile music producers.

Another article from 9 to 5 Mac here:

    https://9to5mac.com/2025/03/19/eu-confirms-apple-can-make-a-portless-iphone-without-usb-c/

All the discussion seems to be about phones, mind you, I've never seen iPads mentioned in this context. The article does state, though, that "a fully portless iPhone is only a matter of time" and that the EU have confirmed they would not object to that.

  • In other words.

My current ipad system is the last id buy ?

Even with usbc. Do you need to leave audio interace on just to keep ipads charged or disconnect, add a plug etc ?

Yeah, need for dongles, hubs etc is already a pain in the ass if you ask me. Hope they don't make things worse for musicians than they already are. No sign that this is imminent, might never happen, might only happen to iPhones, might only happen to some iPhones. If they do this to iPads, I'd switch to laptop or hardware - or just back to acoustic instruments - I think. Would be the final straw.

No audio output, unless you make music without audio. Then see how it is, sound wise. After downloading from icloud lol.

I'm sure this wouldn't apply to Pro models. But I can see it coming in on standard iPhones.

  • Highly doubt this will happen with iPad models, and equally doubtful for iPhones, at least in the short to mid term.

Apple just shipped the iPhone 16e that doesn't support Magsafe charging, which I assume would be the alternative to charging via USBC.

doesn't have the magnets but does support wireless charging, you could easily use a magsafe sticker on your phone case and bob's yer uncle.

    Yeah, this ^^^

    Damn annoying!

  • I use wireless charging 100% of the time with my iPhone in my office, room, and car and I think removing the USB-C port is a bad idea lol

    Welcome to the future

I was still using a headphone jack at the beginning of 2019 (or 2020). So for a test I connected the cheapest Behringer interface. Since then, I haven't looked back. I forgot about the headphone jack faster than it was phased out.

    greetings

If you like dongles then yes. All my devices have no headphone jacks and I have dongles lying around virtually everywhere.

Scenario: iPad + launchpad all good but wait, you need to use an interface because there’s no headphone jack. Etc, etc….no need to gut this subject much further.
