Quadraphonic Explorations & Participatory Soundscapes

Hello everyone :) ,

I work with participatory art in the field of musical improvisation. I create environments for live ensembles that anyone can join. The instrumentation includes natural, mostly pentatonically tuned instruments as well as virtual instruments such as synthesizers and microphones with various effects.

Currently, I'm working on setting up a small quadraphonic PA system that uses LFOs to move channels, frequencies, and effects meaningfully across the four speakers, which also function as monitors. Everything is mixed using AUM. The preamplifier is a Mackie CFX 12 and the audio interface is a Focusrite 8i6 with 6 analog inputs and 4 analog outputs.

I'm a German native speaker with a background in music education (B.A. Music in Childhood) and a certified drums teacher for popular music. My work focuses on improvisation techniques and creating inclusive musical experiences.

I'm always happy to discuss improvisation, ensemble development, and related topics like workshops and participatory music. If that's something you're into, feel free to reach out!

Looking forward to connecting with you all in this forum!

  • That sounds really interesting to me; I’ve been trying to think of ways to develop the practice I explored In basic electronic sound making into something that could be workshopped/brought into more public view. It’s mostly stayed in the lab for now, I’ve designed a free approaches to installation work with it but not realised any of them yet, but would really like to get others involved, public or practitioners…

  • Hi Krupa "That sounds really interesting! I understand your interest in bringing electronic sound art from the lab into the public eye. I also work with an 'orchestra' of natural and electronic instruments for art projects.

From my experience, it helps enormously to limit the tonal range to pentatonic scales - this makes improvisation much easier for all participants and ensures harmonic results. Perhaps a good approach would be to start with a small installation at a party or informal event to see how the work is received in public.

I'm curious about your technical approach to sound generation. I'm experimenting with MIDI sensors and have already incorporated a TC11. For a theremin-like instrument, I'm considering between a ribbon controller or proximity sensors. The instrument only exists in my head so far, but with the iPad and MIDI Flow, the tones can already be well limited and controlled.

Sound manipulation or adding ambient layers through a mixer is relatively easy to implement. But sound generation, creating a truly interesting instrument - that's the real challenge in my opinion. The TC11 for iPad has actually already done this well as a touch synth.

What sound-generating interfaces and controllers do you use for your electronic sound installations?"
