JWM - Life After Love (Instrumental Trance in Cubasis 3)
Pretty much what it says on the tin. I created this piece in Cubasis 3. Despite not having its own drum module, I've found Koala Sampler to be more than adequate to serve as such. Simple 3-band EQ per pad absolutely helps out a lot.
Mastered with Grand Finale 2, Cubasis' Brickwall limiter set to -1dB, and Youlean's Loudness Meter. The Trance lead is the Hoover preset (40) tweaked a bit. Hope you all enjoy this one. If you do, leave a comment.
Cheers.

You did it again, my friend. What great track!
Thank you so much mate.
Well done!
Thank you, friend. I appreciate that.
Great that JW! Bought Cubasis last week and learning GR2 at the same time…amazing software…
Sounds really good
Amazing.
Yes, Cubasis 3 and GR2 are my "bread and butter" goto creative environments. The way I mark down an idea in Cubasis 3 is by using that default piano sound to lay out bass notes, chords, and melody. For multi-section pieces, I use a separate MIDI clip for each section. Then I can copy/paste that into the respective instruments. For example, if I want to create the bass, I'll copy/paste the "idea" clip into the bass instrument and erase the chords and melody. Eventually, depending on genre, I'll add subtle layers underneath as well as drums (if the genre calls for drums, which most genres do except for Ambient in most cases).
GR2 is far more immediate when it comes to the creative process and doesn't require me to use the "piano MIDI clip" method, but GR2 doesn't have as many options to get the cleanest mixdowns internally like in Cubasis 3. However, GR2 is far more fun to create in.
And the best part of it mate is...now that GR2 has stem export, you can simply import the stems into Cubasis 3 and get that clean mixdown if you so choose.
Thank you so much, mate.
I appreciate it.
It's really interesting hear your different method of how you turn an idea into a song/ track. I like the way you start with a piano and build from there. I've got to get out of the idea that I'm making a track by starting with drums, adding a bass line then buidling a melody as it seems to hamstring me into something with nowhere to go! I appear to be falling into the trap of creating lots of ideas that turn into grooves and then don't know what to do with them.
I think the trick for me will be to just develop one idea and try and make it into something with a beginning, middle and end and actually complete it. I need some discipline!
Saying that, I've been concentrating on a track where I've sampled guitars from Wire's 'Kidney Bingos' and turned it into a sort of synth edit. I'll post on here when it sounds half decent, would love to know what you think...
Be sure to tag me when you post it, mate.
Meanwhile, though I'm exhausted af right now, I can give advice how to start and finish a track.
(Although starting with a groove works fine with quite a few genres such as Acid House where the groove is king.)
Just out of curiosity, what genre(s) do you produce, and which DAW do you use?
TBH, I’m pretty new to a lot of this. I messed about with GarageBand and then Logic on desktop recording guitar, vocals and adding bits of drums and bass. Got a decent iPad for work use and started messing with Logic on that but found the GUI a bit overwhelming. Then GR2 came out and I love how straightforward it is so been going through Doug and Leo’s tutorials and hints on this forum which has been a great combo. While doing that I heard more and more about Cubasis and have just started looking at that too!
As for genres, I doodle with a bit of everything really although my wife and kids take the piss out of me when I play it back to them, ‘Sounds like New Order again Dad!’
I’m definitely in the camp of enjoying the process of learning software and not too bothered if it amounts to anything, it is one of the most relaxing ways to spend my time doing something with one of the greatest loves of my life, music!
Excellent combo of tutorials for GR2 in my opinion. Helped me learn the app before the manual was finally released, lol. I really appreciate Leo's and Doug's hard work. While exploring Cubasis, I do highly recommend the IAPs, especially the FM Classics, NeoFM, and Halion sounds. These are fantastic sounds that can fit most genres (if not all genres). And if you're into more orchestral work, I suggest also purchasing Iconica Sketch app (which has full integration inside of Cubasis!)
Ah, so close to Post Punk, or more Synth Pop?
I agree 100% with this. I love spending time making music quite a lot actually.
Ha! More synth pop I would say. I think 'Perfect Kiss' is a masterpiece...now I've started making music, this blows my mind with what is going on. love the mix of synths and guitars especially.
I friggin loved this song! It is indeed a masterpiece.
(Yes, I listened through to the whole thing.) So that's what your music sounds like?
That's cool.
Okay, odd question. Do you have Koala Sampler (and Samurai Mode and Mixer) yet? Do let me know if you do or don't, because that's what I use as a drum module in Cubasis 3. Then I can try to recreate something similar to "Perfect Kiss" in CB3 and send you the project file.
More like that’s what I would like my music to sound like! Good to have something to aim for…
Yeah, I’ve got Koala and the Samurai add in, not the mixer but I will grab that.
