Hardware for two channel / stereo out for live sets.

edited March 20 in Hardware

Hi. Recent Loopy Pro convert, replacing two standard looping pedals (NUX LOOPCore and DigiTech JamMan Stereo).

I use my set up to play live, so it needs to be reasonably portable (I could fit everything on two pedal boards).

I did have it set up like this:

Mono signal > Boss line selector pedal (LS-2)

Guitar: Line 1 > Looping pedal (DigiTech) > Mixer > Left channel > Amp 1

Synth / etc: Line 2 > Looping pedal (NUX) > Mixer > Right channel > Amp 2

I want to be able to do the same, but using my phone running Loopy Pro (and any other apps required) instead of the two looping pedals. I have a M-Vave Chocolate for the guitar loops and an Akai LPD8 for other loops. Both are Bluetooth. All the MIDI stuff has been sorted out.

I need the ability to have the loops as the last thing in my chain, before the mixer, as I use effects on both signals and use the LS-2 line selector to decide what signal is sent to where in Loopy Pro.

I also don’t need to have stereo signals, just two seperate mono signals to go to two amps.

Current hardware I have to (hopefully) pull this off:

  • iPhone 13 with latest iOS
  • iPhone camera adapter (USB A to Lightning)
  • Boss LS-2 line selector
  • IK iRig USB (sends a mono signal via 1/4” jack, but can send stereo from 3.5mm headphone jack).
  • Behringer UMC404 interface (https://www.behringer.com/product.html?modelCode=0805-AAT)
  • Behringer Xenyx 802S mixer (https://www.behringer.com/product.html?modelCode=P0575)
  • Akai LPD8
  • M-Vave Chocolate
  • 2x XLR to 1/4” cables
  • 3.5mm TRRS Y cable (male to 2x female)
  • 3.5mm TRS Y cable (male to 2x female)
  • 1/4” Y cable (male to 2x female)
  • Unpowered USB 4 port hub
  • Adapters to go from 3.5mm to 1/4” and vice versa.

I have figured out how out how to have two channels going into Loopy Pro (I think) using Audio Bus 3 and then sending it out as two channels. Emphasis on I think. I have also figured out how to control multiple loop and master levels using the knobs on the Akai LPD8.

As I said, this is a live rig. I need to be able to pack it into (preferably) a pedal board and have it velcroed down. Using a laptop on stage is out of the question. It’s too big and I also can’t run Loopy Pro on it. I’d prefer not to have to purchase anything more besides cables / adapters.

Sorry for the long post, just trying to figure this out before Monday’s rehearsal.

Thank you!

  • @Verbs_and_Nouns : out of curiosity, why do you need Audiobus in this set up?

Zoom makes good quality 2-in/2-out and 2-in/4-out interfaces that are quite compact and seem pretty popular for portable rigs.

  • edited March 21

I was using Audiobus to create two seperate channels in and out in my phone… can I do this in Loopy?

The Zoom AMS interfaces just look like more compact versions of my Behringer UMC404 interface, and I don’t want to spend anymore money on things like that.

On that note, I haven’t tried the Behringer interface with Loopy yet. I only thought of it before work this morning. I’ve only used it to connect to my laptop for GarageBand recording, never to my phone.

Can you clarify what you mean about Audiobus? Maybe post screenshots?

I can’t think of anything with regards to audio inputs and output that Audiobus would be required for. Loopy Pro can use any audio inputs and outputs that are available.

Well I thought I was setting it up correctly like this, but very happy to be corrected. If I don’t have to use Audiobus, that would be great.

Orange is channel 1, Yellow is channel 2.

Unfortunately I’m at work, so I can’t choose any outputs except my headphones.

I also watched this video, and I think the Behringer interface will do what I want, which can have up to 4 seperate signals in and then send two seperate signals out via XLR or 1/4” jacks and I think I can also use my Behringer mixer to do the same? 8 in, 2 out. It’s just the connecting to my phone via USB that I’m confused about. (EDIT: From what I can see, this looks like it may not be achievable without some sort of hack).

  • @Verbs_and_Nouns : I don’t see anything there that loopy pro can’t handle on its own . It sees the same hardware inputs and outputs as Audiobus.

  • Okay cool.

Well that’s one less thing I need to worry about.

  • You will need the powered apple camera connection kit, and a 20 watt adapter to power your iphone and your audio interface. That and your bluetooth controllers is all you need to bring.

  • Thanks.

I tried it with the included power adapter for the interface and the camera adapter into my phone, but no dice. My phone recognised the interface, and I could see the inputs in Loopy and there was a signal being recognised, but I couldn’t get a sound out of it. Either through the main outs or headphones. I’ll try and grab a powered USB hub this weekend and try again.

I did also get my mixer doing what I wanted… but it’s a bit of hack (using RCA cables and looping mixer back into itself) and there was a lot of noise and I could barely get a loud enough signal in Loopy to make it worthwhile.

  • You have to turn up the volume on your iPhone

  • @Verbs_and_Nouns : can you describe exactly how you have things connected or post a sketch of the precise connections and a screenshot of Loopy’s mixer

I made sure of that, but still no signal going out of the interface.

  • Did you turn up the mix knob?

Basically I did what this guy did with the mixer.

He does it with a Behringer Q802USB, whereas I have the 802S.

I bridged the RCA inputs and outputs and connected my phone using a camera adapter to the USB cable of the Behringer. Apparently the mixer can’t send AND receive via USB? I ran two 1/4” cables into the mixer. I think I hard panned them left and right, then two cables from the left and right outputs, out to my two amps.

It allowed me to play recorded clips and loops from my phone into the Behringer mixer from Loopy, as well as receiving a signal into my phone into Loopy, However, it also seemed to create a feedback loop as well. I could adjust this with the master volume on the mixer and in Loopy, but I’m not sure if it will be loud enough to play live.

Also, the signal going into the mixer and then into my phone was quite quiet. I need to play around with it and see if I can get it louder without any noise.

I can post more and pictures and screenshots tomorrow.

  • @Verbs_and_Nouns : if you could sketch your exact signal flow it would be helpful.

This is how I have it set up. Note there is no power plugged into the mixer for the photo, but I’m using the power adapter.

I have the Boss LS-2 line selector to split the signal so I can pan the mono signal hard left and right, with each side going to a separate amp.

This the mixer set up in Loopy.

How Loopy recognises the mixer as an input.

Loop / clip screen (work in progress).

Loops (blue) are going to be recorded live (guitar / synth / noise through pedals), clips (pink) will be pre-loaded. My aim is to have the blue live loops sent to amp 1 and the pink clips sent to amp 2. BUT (!) also be able to send some of the live recorded loops to amp 2 and / or mix the two signals together to come out both amps.

But as I said I’m also going to get a powered USB hub and try the Behringer UMC404HD interface.

EDIT: if I can’t get it to work like I want, I can always just run it all to the mixer and adjust levels so the the pre-recorded stuff isn’t louder than the guitar and and vice versa. Even if I try and hard pan them a bit as well.

  • My previous set up was:

Signal > LS-2 to select between two looping pedals then:

Loop pedal 1 > mixer channel 1 (panned left) > left output > amp 1

Loop pedal 2 > mixer channel 2 (panned right) > right output > amp 2

Pre-recorded clips triggered by Akai LPD-8 > iPhone w/ dongle for 3.5mm line out > mixer channel 3 (panned right)

Using my phone and Loopy instead of the two looping pedals has really thrown a spanner in the works. 😅

  • @Verbs_and_Nouns : can you post a screenshot of the mixer in extended mode with the interface connected so we can see the destination/output routing.

In one of the pictures, it looks like you have two input channels in the mixer and both are receiving both channels from the interface. My understanding was that you wanted to handle inputs 1 and 2 independently. If that is the case, set one input channel to receive input 1 and the other to receive only input 2.

In one of the pictures, it looks like Loopy is receiving input from the internal mic rather than the interface.

I think I took that when my phone was unplugged. I’ll do another screenshot with it all connected and my mixer powered on.

    I got it!

Managed to get what I wanted. Thanks to @espiegel123 for bringing up the inputs one and two, that made the difference.

Loopy mixer is set up as below:

Input A (blue) is live loops going to left channel.

Input B (yellow) is live loops going to right channel.

Pink is pre-recorded clips going to right channel.

Individual levels of each channel are controlled by MIDI knobs on my Akai LPD8 (disregard the labelling on the screenshot below).

Behringer mixer is plugged in like this for guitar and synth signal coming in.

Green cable is left input, red is right input. The signal is switched between the two with the Boss LS-2 line selector.

I can’t go much louder than 1/4 volume on the two channels on the mixer and 1/2 volume on the main mix out due to a feedback loop happening (assuming it’s the RCA inputs being bridged), however I have volume control on both the amps as well. I haven’t gone to a proper playing volume with my amps. I hope it’s okay when I get to the rehearsal room.

For now I’m happy with this. I may consider adding a control in Loopy to blend everything between channels, but that’s another time.
