Speakers

Without having a designated ‘studio’ space in the house, I love the portability of the iPad. I’m using a Nanokey and Nanakontact and an Akai mPK mini plus and it’s a perfect set up for me as I can get it all out and pack it up fairly easily.

One thing I’ve been thinking about is speakers. I use a 2020 iPad Pro and the inbuilt speakers are ok but was wanting something a bit better. Does anyone have any recommendations for something portable, that I can have 2 of to use in stereo? Probably Bluetooth. I was looking at the Minirig 4 but reviews are patchy.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Cheers

  • You’ll be unhappy with the inherent latency using Bluetooth speakers.

Tbh it’s more for playing things back. I’ve been using a Sonos Roam 2, but that’s more suited to listening to Radio 6 in the garden than anything else. Plus was wanting 2 speakers so could listen in stereo

  • Ah oh, ok. Playback as in recreational listening? Or playback for mixing?

    Playback for mixing

  • They don’t need to be Bluetooth actually. Just portable

  • Anker Soundcore motion plus.

I just bought one for 70€ you can use 2 as a pair. 9 band eq (necassary for best result). almost zero latency via aux. Sounds good. I‘m happy with it.

  • Yes, the motion plus has been on my wishlist. It can be both wired, and wireless 👍 And remembering from an old thread, Crabman isn’t the only one on this forum who is pleased with the Anker Motion Plus.

  • The iCloud Micro Monitors are great, the Adam Audio D3V are amazing. Both need power though…

  • Still rockin my MINIRIG 3 from back in the day. Wish I could afford another. Like all these things placement is key

  • Have you considered a good pair of headphones? A decent pair will cost a few bucks, but I’ve had some good results. To test the results, I burn tracks to CD, then listen to them in my car. I figure that is where most people will be listening. I also asked a few experienced audio engineers to evaluate, and their response was very encouraging. A good pair of flat response headphones will reproduce the sound without coloring the output.

One of the best tips I ever got was to get it right in the individual tracks from the start. That is, don’t try to “fix it in the mix”. I rarely use anything except a good compressor for my final mix. I like MagicDeathEye Stereo.

I love the portability of the iPad. A few years ago, I created a track while sitting on the top deck of a Mississippi riverboat. Another time I sat next to a waterfall in a nearby state park. Most of the time, I just love to sit outside with my morning coffee. There is nothing to set up, just plug and play. 20 years ago, I had a lot of gear and a dedicated room. The downside is that I was confined to that environment. Now I just throw them in a tote bag and go. My iPad and headphones set me free!

Best of luck! I look forward to hearing your music. Have a productive and creative day.

I have a pair of Oppo PM3 which I use but prefer a normal speaker. Agree with the portability of the iPad though, I love it!

Thanks for this. I’ve done a bit of research, watched a few videos and have gone for a couple of these

  • They do sound quite“flat“ out of the box which is typically something you look for in a monitor but it sounds much better after increasing (a lot) the lows and tops with the eq. The eq setup is via bluetooth but the eq works with aux input too and is saved in the box after setup is done. But the first thing you should do is switching the default „super bass“ (or how it is called) setting off. Otherwise the eq is not working. I wish i could save more eq settings but it‘s great to have that at all. And still with no latency on aux input. Maybe i gonna buy a second one…just in case 😄

Cool, thanks for the tip. I finally ordered mine, it arrives tomorrow. From everything i had read, i understood that the EQ doesn’t apply to the AUX in. But it sounds like you’re saying the EQ does apply to AUX, as long as that bass preset is not enabled?

yes, thats correct. EQ definitely works on Aux in. Otherwise i would have sent it back. I think that „bass up“ setting generally „blocks“ the eq, not only via aux in.

I think 1-2 times the eq was not active after the battery run empty. Not a big deal though, you can do both, plug a cable in (aux) and have active bt connection to correct eq settings etc

So does mine. I watched this video, which explains the early (but from a few years ago…

  • Thanks @Berby and @Crabman .

From the description, I assume you still get stereo with only one speaker, right? Having two you would obviously have a wider field.

exactly. I was thinking about the stereo pair but connecting the two speaker works without cable, means bluetooth (i assume). So, i have no clue how that works with bt latency, even when the equipment is plugged into aux.

True! Hadn’t given that any thought.

I’m delighted that i finally have a portable speaker for under $100 that can produce sub tones. I was a bit nervous with the 50 Hz spec and small size, but it’s got weight to it. i’m enjoying some jungle without having to wait to be in the car or with the airpod pros in ear. 👍

And all without the bass boost on. But the EQ definitely needs to be turned on, even though all faders are flat. I guess it’s how the over-sampling is activated and seems to be making the biggest difference. I’m pleased and may purchase a second one down the road.
