On/off toggle effect question.

Occasionally when I set up a widget to turn on and off an effect using toggle, in this case AU3FX:DUB, it doesn’t immediately turn it off, both the widget and the effect along the bottom will flash. If I try and press the effect to turn it off, the same thing happens. This will continue for a few seconds, then turn off.

Is because the effect is a tape delay and it needs to continue for a bit before it completely turns off?

Sorry for all the questions.

It means the effect has indicated that it has a buffer that it still emptying..I.e. delay or reverb tail usually. If you press the button again it will stop the effect even if the buffer is still not empty. Turning it back on may or may not result in an interrupted tail continuing to playback depending on the effect.

  • Awesome. Thanks.

  • This is at least thread number 3 is asking about the blinking I read so far. @Michael , can we please have at least an option to disable the (hard annoying) blinking? No buffer killing, leave the buffer untouched but just show the button widget and effect tab at the bottom bar on/off state when tap on it? No front, but the blinking is really driving crazy. 😛

  • Not a big fan for double press to reach state "off" too tbh. Sometimes the buffer of reverb or delay is in the meantime so silent / not really noticeable but it's still there and now you just don't know, if a double press is still needed or a single press is fine to get state "off". Or you double press but while doing this, the tail is already gone, means a single press only was necessary. It's confusion. I understand that some users want to see if there is an effect still ringing out and also I would like see in some cases if there is something still ringing out but 95% I won't. Especially for musicians who often turn FXs on/off this is a bit frustrating tbh to see always the blinking nightmare. (No front.)

  • An option to disable that behavior might be nice, but for my use-cases, I want the current behavior most of the time—to let the reverb or delay tail finish rather than a harsh cut off.

It's missunderstanding @espiegel123 :) I mentioned leave the ringing out tails should stay untouched. Just meaning the immediately change of the state (on/off) when trigger the button widget or plugin-at-the-bottom-bar.

I think it would be confusing to not have a visual indicator of what is happening. I think it would confuse most people if the effect just stayed on till the tails die and then went off or if the effect looked off but was still dying out.

  • Yes, but for me and other people it indeed it confusing see the crazy blinking – permanent while performing... 😬

I am not understanding how it is confusing once you know what it means. It has a single meaning. I understand that it is confusing if you don’t know what it means. But not understanding how it is confusing once you know.

Do you want it to show that it is off even though the effect is still active?

Or do you want it to show that it is on even though you tried to turn it off?

  • The blinking @espiegel123 – it drives crazy. Just a simple on and off. No more, no less... When I press a reverb FX pedal on the pedal board, there is only on and off. Everything else would be super annoying.

  • When I'm in a room full with talking people ("on"). When I leave and close the door and then go away of course I'm able still hear people talking. But I really only want to see if the door is closed or not. I can hear it with my ears, if an effect is ringing out or not.

In your reverb analogy, the reverb is off when the light goes off. Here the situation is different.

I think most people would find it confusing to turn off a delay and have the light go off and have the delay actually still be on. The current behavior reflects the actual state.

FWIW, this is covered in the Effects section of the docs in the section called Effect Tails

  • This is an important affordance I'm not willing to remove, @ultracello. Is your complaint the pulse cycle duration? It's currently 0.25s (4 times a second); I'd be happy to slow it down to something like 1s if that'd be less visually irritating to you.

    What about a fade?
[edit] I guess you wouldn't know how quickly to fade it though.
Maybe gently pulsing rather than flashing?

🤷🏼‍♂️ Just throwing out ideas. The current behavior doesn't bother me, though perhaps toning it down a bit might be nice.
