Midi not working in Beatmaker 2

  • It seems as if it is working - just don´t know how to get an empty preset in Alchemy!

  • Tap the preset in the middle of the title bar, then tap User >> Create new preset.

By the way, while you can use Alchemy as a MIDI controller for BM2, you won't be hearing the sound in Alchemy. You can pipe MIDI into Alchemy, but not audio.

  • Ok, thanks telecharge! Might as well just leave it alone:-)

  • Or just turn the volume in Alchemy down. (If I understand right what you're trying to do). The you won't hear the Alchemy patch.

Not sure why you'd want to use Alchemy to drive BM2 really - but good luck if that's what you wanna do.

You might find it useful to play the Alchemy Keyboard (there's a nice scale-restricted, velocity sensitive keyboard in Alchemy) and then record the midi in BM2 to get your performance recorded as midi you can then tweak on the piano roll in BM2. You should be able to do that (although you'll need to flick between BM2 listening for midi and then sending it - if it tries to do both at the same time I find it normally crashes).

If Alchemy sends cc's out and accepts them back in then you could even wiggle the effects pads in Alchemy and record this wiggling as Midi cc info in BM2 (you'd need to use MIDI learn in BM2 for this). That cc data can again can be tweaked and played back. Or if you can't you could have BM2 broadcast the midi notes to Alchemy and be recording the audio output of Alchemy via audiobus, then while this is playing through wiggle the FX pads in Alchemy. Much modulated fun to be had if you like that kind of thing.

Wish midi wasn't so fiddly to set up though - as demonstrated by this thread.

  • Well Matt, I was just curious if I could turn it around but there´s no sound at all when I turn the volume down. But I guess you´re right - don´t really need it. I´m not sure what you mean - for instance "tweak the piano roll" or "wiggle the pads". Sounds kind of complicated ;-) When I get into it I might get back to try it though because it definately sound like a good tip but until then - thanks a lot for your answer and for what seems like a great tip!!

  • No worries. Enjoy :).

  • Glad it worked! :)

It worked straight away for me on iPad Air iOS 7.1.2, but I didn't see the "Any Source" setting in Alchemy... This is what I did:

    Open Audiobus

Add BM 2 to Output Slot and start it from the Slot.

    New Project/Keyboard/Empty

    Start Alchemy from OUTSIDE Audiobus

Turn on Background Audio on Alchemy/Settings

Add Alchemy to the Input Slot on Audiobus (audio track is automatically created in BM2)

Back to BM2 and everything is already ok - the keyboard is sending MIDI to Alchemy, and Alchemy is receving. It's possible to record the MIDI track and the Audio Track from Alchemy. I didn't have to change anything else on BM2 various MIDI settings.

  • Well, FRiberio looks like you saved yourself from a lot of trouble:-)! There are so many ways that you can go about it! I fiddled around a lot and probably messed up the settings right from the start!

And btw, thanks to all of you guys out there who have responded to this thread. I must say that I´m surprised (in a good way of course) by the participation and willingness to help a poor soul who lost himself in the ...eh... midi jungle;)

  • I guess this answers my questions why no midi in for my version of Alchemy on the iPhone. I don't recall purchasing the pro version... bummer :(

    @CSwinn said:
When I use it on the iPhone, I see the first image. There is no choice between in vs out, and so I believe it's only the out. MidiBridge confirms this because I can't select Alchemy as in input.

The iPad screen is the second screenshot, and there is a tab in that version to select midi in/out. The Menu->Settings tab is the same as well, minus the BG Audio, Learn, and Midi Out options.

Is it perhaps different versions we're looking at? I can do it no problem on the iPad, but the phone just ain't having it.
