Best iPad only synths?

I’ve only been an iPhone user but soon I’ll have an iPad. What synths/apps are essential that aren’t also available on the iPhone? I’m curious to see exactly what I’ve been missing out on!

Pretty much all of the above. Especially Twin 3.

Also @Fear2Stop , I'd recommend giving miRack a shot. Sure it's for both iPhone and iPad, but it's a right proper pain in the arse to use proper on an iPhone.

So what manner of iPad are you getting @Fear2Stop ? :) A16 base level is very good, but make sure you go for 512gb version.

  • Moog Mariana deserves a mention here. Among Moog apps it's a bit of a bummer because it's not universal (i.e. you have to buy the Mac version separately). And it's a bit of a resource hog. But it sure sounds good.

Moog Mariana definitely lends itself to amazing bass sounds. 😅 A winner in my book for when producing Ambient.

Every time I use Microwave it sounds too harsh. Maybe I need to try it out again. Any favorite presets or tips?

  • Adding to the list:

    Synths

    • Motto Akemie is one of my favorite apps. It’s a super fun and cute drum synth and sequencer
    • Synthmaster 2

    MIDI controller:

    • touchscaper

    Effects:

    • izotope trash (distortion)
    • OtherDesertCities (ambient reverb)

iBassist - especially if you use Lumbeat
    GrooveRider2

  • @FizzyLizzy27

I love Microwave but it needs some reverb, a little chorus, some fx to mellow out the sound. It's pretty raw. The internal modulation is great though. I have a couple patch banks I've been meaning to post, I should get them up this weekend.

Bet. If you post them I’ll be sure to check them out.

  • SHOOM!

It's the answer to almost every question, but especially this one.

Maybe it's just you don't like that type of sound .. i love it a lot, but i loved also HW Microwave XT (for me one of best synths ever made, definitely in top 5) so.. maybe it's just not for you :)

Yeah that raw aggressive digital sound is what i love :-)

    Magellan 2.

I cant deal with the UI, functionality or usabilty, of even the best synths.

    Hopes for synthmaster 3 though.

Magellan 2 is on my iPhone right now.

Oh definitely the Toybox Audio trifecta (Thump One, FM Zone, and Buzz Zone)! Such amazing synths with virtually unlimited sound design potential.

    And I looooooove Microwave!

Twin3 sounds great but I hate the interface with all the tiny, almost microscopic in size controls. I guess it’s tolerable with an Apple Pencil.

Ok, I’ll add to the list:

    Discovery
    Quanta 2 - granular synth
    One Shot - Drum sampler
    Axon 3 - drum synth
    NFM - FM synth
    Aparillo - FM synth

    MIDI

    Harmony Bloom
    Chord Generator
    NEON

    Hosts

    Grooverider 2
    Logic Pro 2

Yes! Man I’d love a Shoom 2 with an Auv3 treatment. Could you imagine?

Yeah.. UI of all FabFilter plugins on iOS is absolute disaster. They reall did zero job to make them more IOS/touchscreen optimised, which is a shame.

    Discovery

Biggest disappointment of year for me becasue it doesn't support AUv3 parameters automation, which renders Discovery for me basically unusable :((

    Aparillo - FM synth

Ooo of course.. this one is great. If we are talking about Sugar Bytes then also Factory is worth to mention

I own Magellan 2 on my iPhone and yeah I bet it’s going to be way more usable on the iPad

I’m definitely getting microwave . Looking at either Moog Mariana or Tal U No X

  • Ringotron is the absolute best iOS only AU effect ever created. I don’t say that lightly either, I work with a lot of developers and this is going to butt hurt several of them- it’s just a solitary opinion, but one that comes with decades of experience.

As far as midi goes, Piano Motifs is an absolute generative colossus that is elevating music more than its contemporaries, I do love my Cem apps, and Autony also.

Ringotron is great… got it on my phone 😎

  • RealPhase is another sick one, the dev blows me away with those presets. The new version’s midi presets are so sick.

Have that too! And yeah it’s amazing,

Was looking for things that are on the iPad only (not available on the iPhone)

  • After just getting through playing a hardware Nord Lead 2 I’m now considering Discovery if the bugs are better than release

I myself am wondering how Nerd Synth compares to Discovery Synth. I have Nerd Synth.

Same here , and I love it! But yeah I’m wondering the comparison myself

Not really a synth, but Scaler 2 (soon to be 3, supposedly) is a must have IMO.

    Ahhh forgot about that one…thanks!

    Absolutely

  • I’m also new to the iPad world and have been looking for some cool synths! I’ve heard some apps have extra features on the iPad that you just can’t get on the iPhone. You might want to check out ones designed for a larger screen so you can play around with more controls.

  • Not just Oneshot (which is fantastic) but all the Klevgrand percussion tools are so worth it, and sadly only on iPad.

  • If you do any kind of live playing Turnado is really hard to beat.
And even though i don't use it (no MPE), many people seem to swear by Factory as a great synth.
