    Yup 🤦‍♂️

  • Thanks for the link but all it says is some guy, described as "investor Glenn Luk", said in 2018 that his guess is that making the iPhone in the USA would drive prices to the $30,000 to $100,000 mark. BTW, that's a $70,000 gap - quite a difference.

So, moving the factory to the USA will result in a $1,000 phone costing 30 times (or maybe 100 times) more.

    And you believe that?

Reporting in Newsweek or weak news reporting?

  • Pretty shoddy reporting. No matter how this all shakes out, Apple will keep their prices in the same range. They always do.

  • There are similar stories about. Anywhere from 3k to 100k. Also warnings of price gouging across the board and huge uptick of online and phone scams. Whatchya gonna do about it? 🤣 I’m considering bicycle repair.

  • Even if that were accurate, it would still be far cheaper to keep manufacturing them in China and importing them even with 300% tariffs. All is good 😉

    Good point

  • What CEO would build a factory in the USA at the moment with Trump changing his mind every second day.

Mid-term elections in 18 months and the US might have a totally different political power base.

  • Trump exempts smartphones and computers from new tariffs, thank God https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/c20xn626y81o

  • Though surely if the poor old Yankees had been priced out of the market, everyone else would have gotten those same products dumped on them at reduced rates?

The Guardian reckoned that prices would increase across the board, internationally, to prevent arbitrage

Well, they quoted an analyst rather than made any editorial comment, I’m not sure the whole notion would have held water in any case. TBF this thread’s sailing pretty close to the wind as it’s hard to comment with much intent without invoking the thought police…

More or less what I expected might happen. There are no credible microchip fab and product assembly alternatives to China at this point. TSMC is the best in the world at what they do and they supply nearly all (about 90%) of the critical microprocessors (in the 2-3 nanometer range) for Apple's iPhones and for other phone manufacturers. It will still be many years until there is a functioning supply chain for world-class chip manufacturing in the US, even with TSMC committing to do this.

Those may not fall under a similar category of being perceived as economically critical for the US.

Don't worry - Trump will change his mind tomorrow and put the tariffs back on phones. He's the King of Flip Flop...
