How to drive Soft Drummer …
… from within Loopy Pro?
I want to create buttons or sliders with midi commands to manipulate Soft Drummer, which of course resides in Loopy Pro as an IAA Input. In Soft Drummer, there is a list of adjustable midi commands. But I’m not able to midi map anything. So here I go to ask for some support.
Thanks
Zsolt

It is a matter of using the send midi message action from loopy pro to Softdrummer to send the midi messages softdrummer is set up for.
great // thank you @espiegel123
I wasn't aware of the midi channel ....
Everything works but there's one thing left - I am trying to assign buttons within Loopy Pro AU to switch banks and rhythms. Soft drummer indicates CC32 and CC0, and I set press / send midi message / target soft drummer / CC0 on channel 10 - but this one won't work
oh and by the way user rhythms changes are not quantised ...
I will greatly appreciate a hint for this
Can you explain more what you mean that user rhythm changes aren’t quantized? In my experience, the drummer app changes patterns at the end of the drummer’s current cycle.
CC32 selects the bank and CC0 selects the pattern. You won’t see the bank change until you send the pattern change.
I just checked and those work fine for me.
@Zsolt : when you send the pattern and bank select CCs, you need to send the the bank number and pattern number. You send me a video and were sending cc value 127.
Remember when you change bank, you need to send the bank number followed by the cc to change the pattern. sending just a bank change does nothing.
You might want to set up a bank change dial and pattern select dial.
Here is the setup for a bank change dial
@Zsolt : I recommend using SoftDrummer’s livepads for quantized pattern switching.
In loopy pro, you can set up actions to execute in a quantized way, but for this case, LivePads are a better solution and there are already triggers for them in the Lumbeat buddy template
Yes, I was going to say that I noticed that the pads do change in a quantized way (while the rhythms really don’t), and of course I’m going to take advantage of that.
Nevertheless, I wonder why I am not able to do what you show. I have no maximum and minimum for CC 32. And the “note” box is not grayed out. : ) So something is different in my Loopy setup?

What are you expecting that button to do?
Bank change only takes effect when you send the next pattern change. Sending a bank change without sending a pattern change won't do anything.
You need to send a bank change followed by a pattern change. When you send bank or pattern change you need to send a value for the bank or pattern.
To change a bank, send the bank change with bank number AND the pattern change with pattern number.
I wanted that button to change rhythms, not banks. I couldn’t figure out how to send bank number and rhythm number at the same time, because the interface looks different on my iPad than on your photos.
But in fact, I’m OK with your hint to use the live pads, and that works fine. I’ll come up with another question regarding to that, though, And I think it will be better to open a new thread to that.
But great thanks for your support so far!
In my pictures, I am using a stepped dial. You are using a button. The same principle applies. You need to send the bank change cc and value and then send the pattern change cc and value. You could send both messages from a button but you might need to put a little delay between the bank change and pattern select messages. Action timing is set by tapping on the button dot that appears next to actions when there is a sequence of actions
getting into it! thanks
I have to admit that I did not get it to work and didn’t spend any more time on this. Switched to Patterning just to be able to proceed.
But now I would like to come back to this.
An important thing would be to be able to drive jam and/or intensity with a volume pedal or to click any of the Lumbeat buddy toggles and buttons with a foot controller.
I am can midi learn whatever I want with that foot switch or with a pedal in the project window. But since the Lumbeat buddy is a window within the Loopy Pro window, I am not able to midi learn anything. Does that make sense? Somehow I don’t understand, how this is knit - and I will be thankful for a hint to go after these things.
try reversing the order. for some reason the dev has not set them the same order in all the apps
Midi learn works in the AU, too. Did you turn it in the AU?
Depending on what you are sending midi from, there may be cases where the AU doesn’t see the midi source. You can see what midi the AU can see by entering midi learn in the AU and tapping on “listening for events”
Yes
Thank you - that works well with the Lumbeat Buddy Example you made.
The - hopefully - last thing I’m trying to understand in this context is how you make that from scratch. So what I mean is, how can I take any project and insert that Loopy AU extension thing into that project. How can I save and load items of the Audio Unit Extension Folder? The explanations in the manual are not related to that - or I have missed something,
.
I don't understand the question. You add Loopy Pro as an AU or MIDI AU like you do with any plugin. In the mixer, press the + to add to the mixer. Choose Add MIDI. Choose Loopy Pro AU.
If you want to use the AU project from the LUMBeat Buddy, you can do two things:
!
It was the preset. - @espiegel123 thanks a lot, I got it now -
@espiegel123
You showed the stepped dial thing a while back
Would you please explain in a little more detail ‘how’ to send bank number followed by the cc to change the pattern? In the midi overview of the lumbeat apps it only says: rhythm cc0 - how to specify which rhythm? Bank number and pattern number. I don’t seem to be able to wrap my head around this one.
@Zsolt : I am not sure what more there is to say. Changing the bank number , sets the bank that a pattern will be chosen from.
Sending a bank change doesn’t change the currently playing pattern.
If you want to play a pattern in a different bank, choose the bank then choose the pattern.
Try it.
