Arson | Cinematic / post-rock / experimental journey featuring Unlink
This one started when I was at my wife's parents house near Himeji. I was playing on the old upright detuned study piano and liked this basic little 3 over 4 polyrhythmic riff so I quickly recorded an audio memo on my phone. Few days later, i listened to it again and thought @unlink might like it so I sent him the memo. After a week or so, he sent me back his logic project including beautiful layers over my original lo-fi piano take. I really liked what he did and used it as the backbone for the first part, added some vocals, a bass and further instrumentation with Staffpad.
Then I had the idea to take the track to a very different place for a more energetic and electric second part where I wanted to play with the rhythmic ambiguity.
It is the first time I include both vertical and horizontal polyrhythmic elements in the same piece. Thanks to Logic great flexibility and ease of use, the ideas were put together very intuitively. What a great app.
I like the overall journey, going from ambient / cinematic to a more post rock feel. The intricate rhythms of the second part almost gives it some math rock vibe at some point. Hope some of you will enjoy the long ride.
Big thanks to @unlink for his usual beautiful soundscapes and to @klownshed for providing the photograph I butchered for the artwork.

Beautiful! I love the contrast between the two sections. @unlink string work is exquisite.
Wow this was incredible. Great work all! Definitely getting some Album Leaf at the beginning into God is an Astronaut at the end.
Fantastic work. I really like the second half! What an amazing energy it has.
This one is literally 🔥😂 Had a lot of fun with this collab.. as usual!
Thank you, Richard glad you enjoyed.
I did most of the string work on the track 😉, but if you're thinking about the solo violin on the first part, I have to agree. @unlink indeed did a very beautiful job and this violin is the star of the first part. I think it is a decent sampler library available on Pianobook.
Not bad, you two! I'm joking - it's exquisite.
Thank you for listening and commenting, Micheal ! Wow, Album Leaf and God is an Astronaut ? 🙏. Still hoping to hear more of your beautiful cinematic music. I am sure @unlink would really enjoy your music (if he hasn't heard any of it yet...)
Epic production @JanKun!
You have a truly adventurous spirit with your creations.
Woven Strings perhaps for the violin ? doesn’t really matter, great track !
The move to the second section had hints of Kate Bush for me which can only be good 👌
That one! Also just realized it disappeared from Pianobook
Thank you for listening Edward! I am actually enjoying listening to this one a lot. very happy with this second part especially how those 2 guitars contribute to the build up with gain stacking and how they interact with the string section.
I see what you mean @unlink , I can’t find it either 🤔
Fire it is !!! Had lots of fun too, really happy with how this one turned out !
Thank you for taking the time to add your unique unlink touch 🎹🎻🙏!
This is bloody great! Best thing I’ve heard on here in ages!
Not bad indeed 😆 thank you for listening !
Thank you for listening Dave ! Adventurous spirit, not sure about this, but I'm enjoying wondering a bit out of the beaten tracks.
Leaving the well worn tracks allows you to find precious gems and I undiscovered gold. The audience will need to be told that’s it’s good but you will know instantly. That’s what truly defines an artist… inventing the next thing.
Any of you minding sharing this beautiful violin in PM ?
Sure! I'll share it as soon as I get back on my iPad
Grazie mille 🙏
Last bump before oblivion 😆
I really like it. I like the way it keeps building and building from gentle almost ambient at the start to rocking out at the end. The soundscape is definitely down my alley. It reminds me of Archive a little.
My favourite thing about it is the clearly AI generated flames in the artwork though ;-)
I do enjoy a (virtual) journey and your pieces @JanKun always contain so much to unpack and enjoy. This one has got everything - it certainly goes from smouldering to full on incendiary. Congrats to @unlink as well - as a listener, it’s only possible to judge a collaboration by the end result so there must have been some very positive sparking going on (I could say you were on fire but I think I’ve used quite enough pyrolytic references). Part of the reason for my delayed comment is that I have been mulling over the concept of vertical and horizontal polyrhythms. If I’ve got it right, the term horizontal refers to multiple divisions of the pulse within a bar, whereas vertical implies that parallel bars may not share a common start/end alignment? Whatever, it sounds deliciously crafted and edgy and while it may slip from the front page of the forum, I will certainly revisit ‘Arson’ as a SoundCloud favourite.
I should definitely listen more to Archive.
Those flames are pure prompting engineer !
Thank you for listening Andy.
On fire it is/was 😄
As for vertical /horizontal, the way I meant was
Vertical: Two or more rhythms played simultaneously. Example: in the piano intro 3:4 polyrhythm — one hand plays three evenly spaced notes in the same time another plays 4. (This is the first section, for commodity set in 6/8 time signature in Logic)
Horizontal: usually it is defined as different rhythmic groupings or feels that happen sequentially or over time rather than at once. Basically time signature change. Exemple in the track, the first section has some kind of 6/8 feel shifting to 4/4 in the second section (the shift of time signature feel was made progressively with the gradual tempo acceleration during the short transition.
The second "fire" part of the track also includes polymeter on the first half where bass, guitars and strings plays in 3/4 (continuation of the 6/8 feel of the first part) while the punkish drums are in 4/4. I personally like to think polymeters (Two or more time signatures occurring simultaneously, but sharing the same pulse) as horizontal as they visually feel more horizontal than vertical. Basically measures sharing same pulse but with different lengths.
Sorry for the long explanation. I might be wrong in my way of thinking compared to what academic books would describe, but either way we call things, we describe the same concepts.
Reading back all this, from outsider pov, it might look like some complex thinking was put into the creation of this piece, but actually not at all. It is just the way the track was felt, an idea that suddenly popped up clearly in mind when I heard the first part. My mind is not that convoluted. I basically trust intuitions and ideas and follow this little inner singing voice. All of those theory things are just the technical aspects that need to be dealt with inside logic in order to realise the original feel/idea. That's the reason why I personally love Logic so much. It contains all the functions to bring to life all kinds of crazy shit.
Thank you for taking the time to explain your exploration of the vertical and horizontal. I had wondered if Logic could have different time signatures on different tracks - it seems not but can have different phrase lengths under a global time signature? Your passionate endorsement of Logic certainly intrigues me. I’m with you in that the theory is not why you do something but provides a language to communicate what has been done after the fact. That said, my inner voice always benefits from being fed with as many musical concepts as I can find. I found the Wikipedia article on hemiola a useful resource.
Looking forward to your next journey.
