macmini 2018

hey guys,
i could have a macmini 2018 64gb ram 500gb ssd i7 and 1 year warranty for 400€.
is this a good price?
beside osx support drop is scheduled about 2026, what else is to keep in mind?

cheers

  • Though it is an attractive price, I wouldn't recommend anything that's not with the M series chip now-a-days, the Apple Silicon chips.

does that mean alot of modern software is not running with this machine?

  • a m-machine with the same specifics is way above 1000€

  • Using the cheapest 2018 Mac Mini for Xcode development work just fine 👍

  • just running logic, a few good plugins and some kontakt-librarys.
    workhorse.

If it’s just for Logic and a few good plugins and kontakt you will probably be OK for a while, but if you are intending to use it as your only computer for everything you might run into a few holes within a year or two.

As a by the way, it’s difficult to compare an M series machine to an Intel machine by just the RAM and ssd size alone. They operate slightly differently in the way they use their memory stacks - apart from other differences in the hardware design.

If you are intending to use this machine for some time be aware that end of support means no more software updates which might shorten the life expectancy of the Mac depending on how you use it.

  • Many iOS plugins can run on the Apple Silicon Macs (at no extra cost), whereas only a few have Intel versions. That may or may not factor into any cost decisions.

    a quick google finds a refurb 2023 macmini M2 16Gb for £455 , so I don’t think original post is good price
    https://www.hoxtonmacs.co.uk/products/mac-mini-m2-8-core-2023-good?variant=48046561100092

& thanks to 30% price cut for the M4 generation* , a new base unit is £599 which is a bargain & would be a significant upgrade if you could find the xtra .

16gb should be fine for your stated needs , so I would prioritise more powerful CPU over more RAM

*edit, in fact the M4 gen lower price/higher performance should have significant knock on effects to the 2nd hand market .

  • The only reason I can think of to get an Intel Mac is compatibility. Intel code runs much better on Intel natively than on the Rosetta emulation but in your case I'd suspect that your software is already compatible with ARM (M series) and I bet that for a price not far above, you can already get a second hand M series Mac Mini too.
But think twice if a Macbook won't be the better option. In my case it was.

  • I'd rather look for a used Apple Silicon model with 16 Gb RAM in the same price range.
Intel Macs were a hot mess. Literally hot.
I think I'll get an M4 Mac Mini one day. Definitely not a Macbook, I don't want to deal with quality issues anymore, at least there's not much that can break in the Mac Mini.

  • thanks for all hints and tips.
problem is when you add 512gb or more ssd space to a m processor machine.
this is the point where apples policie gets criminal.

a battery driven apple product is out of the question, i wouldnt buy a ipad again also.

But, it might be a false economy to buy something that is now at the end of it’s support period and 7 years in computer land is a long time. The jump in processing power that happened when Apple went to M series processors in 2020 was very significant. The M1 MacBook Air I had for a time blew away the Intel i7 2019 MacBook Pro I owned at the same time - for almost half the retail price.

  • i maybe get a mac mini m1 then,
    its 500€ for 16gb ram and 512ssd
