Nice find, and a very well written article.

Those are huge vulnerabilities. I think worse than any I've seen. Worse perhaps than any Windows vulnerabilities I can recall. Enough so that I think I may finally update my iPad to iPadOS 18 as I'm not clear if any patch has been released for iOS 17.

Especially concerning is the potential for one impacted device to become a wormhole source to compromise devices on any network they attach to. Even something like a speaker, TV, or even a car can be vulnerable to certain levels of compromise (such as turning on a microphone to eavesdrop).

I bet the NSA is licking their chops though.

The root of this is some very astonishing lazy coding on Apple's part. To the point that it had me seriously wondering if this might be fake news. Not checking that the type of data returned from a request is the same type expected? That's like security 101 and they missed it in an over the air situation?? Passing sensitive data via HTTP?? Bizarre.

  • Yeah, it’s startling and recent. I always run the latest OS. If it hobbles some audio app… oh well… I want the latest security patches.

It was passed on by one of the software engineers in a slack channel at my wife’s work. They sell firewalls, etc. So, it’s likely legit.
