ANALOGyX1 Mini Mono Synth (AUv3)

ANALOGyX1 is a virtual instrument plugin that can run standalone, or in any AU compatible host such as Logic Pro or GarageBand. Please note that the standalone version does not include a built-in keyboard - you need to connect a suitable MIDI device to play the synth.

Overview

ANALOGyX1 (analog-ee ex one) is a compact virtual dual oscillator (plus sub and noise) monophonic synthesiser with a retro vibe. The synth might be "mini" in terms of features, but it's capable of producing some fairly complex sounds normally associated with plugins with dozens of parameters. That's because there's actually quite a lot going on "under the hood".

ANALOGyX1 is a follow-up to the popular poly synth, ANALOGYXS, and if you don't have that one already, I do think X1 and XS play nice together! Keeping with an approach introduced with the XS synth, many of the parameters you see on the Ul can be considered "macro" controls and actually change more than just one thing in the synth engine. Some of them are also very interactive and hope this encourages hands-on experimentation!
And of course, the Randomize feature can often produce some happy accidents - in fact, many of the factory presets are "refined" versions of the results from simply tapping the Randomize button!

I also wanted to add a few quirks that hopefully make ANALOGyX1 a bit more than "yet another mono synth". For example, it's possible to pan the two main oscillators, while keeping the sub oscillator centred. The sub oscillator also has its own dedicated filter that's been tuned to retain bass response. ANALOGyX1 also has quite a unique performance-oriented trick up its sleeve that might make it especially interesting to fans of electronic music pioneers from the late 70's. More specifically, a signature sound and playing technique often associated with synth supremo Billy Currie, particularly prevalent on his work with Ultravox and Gary Numan / Tubeway Army. This cool sound is a combination of oscillator sync, along with very skilful control of the oscillator tuning and pitch-bend / modulation wheels. In ANALOGyX1, l've added an "Auto Sync" mode which attempts to reproduce this effect without having to manipulate additional controls - you simply play the notes, and ANALOGyX1 does the knob twiddling behind the scenes for you! Now, I'm not saying this feature will turn you into Billy Currie, but I hope you agree that ANALOGyX1 at least captures a little bit of the magic of that sound.

Comments

  • The gui is somewhat putting me off but it sounds amazing. Sounds like a real analogue synth.

    .

  • Loving this paradigm of powerful synths with macro controls - great range of sounds but intuitive and grabbable like a performance instrument should be. Price is insane for what you get. That's two hits in a row now, awesome work RJ!

  • Are any parameters exposed for modulation?

    Yes. All of them.

  • Who would pay a couple of 1000 for a hardware synth when you can have this quality for just 2,99. Amazing demo @thesoundtestroom

  • Ooo haven't watched Doug's video yet but if this is a mono synth inspired by Ultravox's Billy Currie it's got to be a ARP Odyssey homage right?

Hi @FPC, I don't really do specific hardware clones, but I was chasing his signature sound for sure. As you probably know, much of that is down to oscillator sync and then de-tuning the 2nd oscillator, and that's what the "auto-sync" mode is all about. Of course, you can still do it with the pitch-bend wheel in "manual" mode if you prefer.

Funnily enough, Doug's great demo only touched on that sound briefly, so you can hear it in a bit more detail during the melody sections of my rather dubious version of the MBV classic here:

Sorry to double-post the video in the forum, but hoped it might be helpful as a sonic reference in this context.

Many thanks for the interest, encouragement and purchases - much appreciated!

  • Thanks for clarification :)

Supposed to be working but my head is in synthland!

Will watch all videos and purchase later for sure.

I started the app in S.A. first (as you should) then played around a bit and got this superb deep deep sound. I really wanted to save it but forgot I can't. Took a screenshot so I can redo it in whatever environment I'm playing it in. Sso ffun (not really, but doable.)

  • It sound so good. Rob, love these mini synths and their price point.

Great synth sounds for a reasonable price? Who wouldn't love this?

Great sounding demo, Rob. I'm serious about my previous comments that you should be posting more music here (even if they're cover songs). Use your own plugins to both demo them and show off your music skills.

  • Does this app permit the full 48 note pitch bend?

Full mpe on these would be fab!

Howdy Folks. Many thanks for the interest in, and support of ANALOGyX1 - it's definitely doing better than I thought it would for sure!

@Gavinski - I don't currently plan on adding MPE support to X1 or XS, but MPE is very much on the roadmap / not too distant horizon. ;)

In the meantime, and on the topic of expression, in case you don't already know, X1 has just had a little update to support MIDI CC#11 / expression, and if I may say so myself, it's surprisingly, um... expressive! :)

How so? Well, because of the way X1 (and XS) work under the hood, the amp envelope also modulates other stuff, depending on the patch, like pitch LFOs, PWM, filter envelope and LFOs, etc., etc.

So... if you modulate the amp envelope with MIDI expression, then you're also modulating all of that other stuff downstream. Basically it means that for X1 (and soon, XS) expression is doing much more than simply changing the volume of the synth. FWIW, I really like it

  • rob thanks alot! sounds incredibly good.

  • i was exactly looking for that lead sound.
always tried to do a sync lead like this using terapro or moog modular on ios, but i always failed.

  • The “Random” preset is a clever way to bring this functionality. It produce some very good presets!

By the way, for anyone who just got this and now you're looking for more patches? You could randomize your own, or you could check out James Dyson's video on YouTube yesterday and then dial in some of the patches he made. Some really great sounds there.

  • James is an amazing sound designer. Funnily enough, in the next XS update (currently in review) I've added a few of his to the factory list. With his permission, of course!

I'll see if I can twist his arm to do some X1 presets too... ;)

    Cheers Folks!

For playing lead sounds I like to use GeoShred or Animoog as a controller. It seems to require 48-step pitch bend for these controllers to have full pitch control.

That is for controlling MPE synths. If you set the pb range in animoog z to 2 or 12 and set the target to the same it works fine.

Touchscaper with MPE as an AUv3? =D
