Can you sync appreggiators on synths to MIDI clock?

Hello. I've loved appreggiators on synths since the 80s and it's cool that iOS synths have them. Do some synths like iMini accept MIDI clock from a DAW like Cubasis, and then match the BPM of the song? Thanks.

  • short answer: yes many ios synths do accept Midi input from a DAW - but Midi on ios is still a beast that needs to be tamed so to speak. There are often issues with midi clock sync not staying in sync on many ios apps.

  • Yes MIDI is a bitch on iOS. I want to ask if I could have some examples of syth appreggiators that successfully sync with a DAW. Thanks!

  • The latest version of StepPolyArp,which includes some internal sounds but shines at controlling other synths syncs well with Cubasis.IPad Air IOS 7.12.

  • I was going to suggest SPA also. Its pretty sweet. Magellan is good too - has 2 synth engines - a built in arp that can send midi to either - or another ios synth. Also Xynthesizr is supposed to be good from reports here. I think there are probably a few others.

  • midiSequencer is worth looking into. It's very flexible and comprehensive.

Thanks. I haven't tried Magellen or MIDI Squencer yet. I like StepPolyArp but it is a step based program. I'm looking for a synth that can take the clock input from a DAW and allow me to play the appreggiator in time with the beat of the song. That way I can lay down live appregated tracks that will sync up with the rest of the song. Thanks.

    SPA will do this.

SPA will take the clock input from a daw. Then let you play its keyboard an fix the arp to the beat of the song.

You can also play certain synth keyboards (eg Thor, I believe) as midi out to SPA then send SPA midi back to the synth giving you an in time arp.

Sunriser and the VirSyn synths also have good in built arp functions which I'm sure you can sync to a daws midi clock.

  • Thanks Matt. I don't have those synths yet but I have SPA. I'll try everyone else's suggestions too.

I'll pick up those synths and MIDI Sequencer eventually but I was wondering if there is a way to use what I already purchased.

What I do have for appreggiator synths include the iMini, iSem, and Polysix. Does anyone have any experience syncing a DAW's MIDI clock to their appreggiators in real time? Thanks for all your help.

  • I use Thesys (on ipad2, ios7) and it syncs well to Cubasis. I'll use Thesys to trigger Animoog and record into Cubasis thru Audiobus. Works well :)
