Can i use an external mixer to control volume on each doughnut

I would like to use an external mixer to connect to my ipad/audiofuse so i can control each doughnuts volume real time, assigning each doughnut to a nob on the mixer. is this possible?

You could use a midi controller to control levels of independent clips. Is that what you mean?

  • yes something like a midi controller, or even better, would it be possible to add a second ipad screen where i can slide over the volume controller from loopy to the second screen?

You can set up a control surface on another iPad using widgets sending midi either over bluetooth or direct usb connect (or over wifi, but that's often problematic).

You just need to set up widgets that send midi on the control surface iPad, then midi learn those to the clip volumes on the other iPad. That probably won't provide midi feedback though, so there are some definite issues. For instance, if you change the volume directly on the clip, it won't sync with the control on the control surface. Also, without some trickery, the controls won't save their state. (There's a workaround for that).

I believe @espiegel123 may have described a way to get two-way feedback over Bluetooth, but I've lost track of the way to do it.

In short, yes, that can be done, but there are some factors to consider that make it not completely transparent.

TouchOSC + the OSC protocol can also be used to control Loopy from another iPad with two-way feedback. That's not particularly simple to set up either, but can be done.

If you send midi from one iPad to another and midi learn it, midi feedback happens automatically.

Not over Bluetooth in my experience. I just tried it and there was no feedback to Loopy Pro on iPhone from Loopy Pro on iPad.

I set up a slider widget on the iPhone with send midi CC 11, then midi learned a mixer fader on the iPad. I can control the mixer fader from the iPhone, but moving the mixer fader doesn't update the widget on the iPhone. Feedback is enabled for the iPhone Bluetooth device on the iPad.

    Sounds like a bug.

  • how about if i had 2 ipad screens via HDMI, would i be able to mover the mixer from loopy to the other screen, so one ipad screen takes over just the mixing board of loopy? that would be ideal. or just simply create volume control on each doughnut and move all the volume controls on one ipad screen

You can’t move actual windows between iPads. You could set up one as a midi controller to send midi to the other but that is about it. Some fancier multi-device integration is planned but is not happening in the near-term.

  • @guitarhero07 : you can use midi controllers to control just about any aspect of Loopy Pro

  • thanks for all the great advice, i will look further into this and see what i can do.
