Basic setup for iPad standalone
Hello,
new into the world of iOS music production. I am searching for a basic setup to use iPad in live situation as drum machine and synth without computer. Two simpple questions.
1) Can I use different midi controllers and how do I connect them? I know that imidiconnect need a computer in order to pass audio out.
2) And should I buy an audio interface?
Cheers
Comments
1) yes, a powered usb hub and a camera connection kit.
2) yes

Ok. Why I should get an audio interface? Why I cannot run the signal from the headphone jack directly into the mixer or PA system? Can you suggest a cheap audio interface who suit my needs?
Behringer uca222
Just another question about midi controller. Is it possible to use several midi controllers (i.e. 3) connected into ONE iPad, just with 1 powered usb hub and 1 camera connection kit?
Thank you very much!
Yes, you can use extra controllers via hub. There are threads here about interfaces and controllers. Have a browse/search and then ask for specific feedback. There are even threads about hubs. We're a bunch of fekkin nerds.
Most modern controllers offer usb midi out so you can skip an interface and plug it directly into a hub. But if you have an older 5 din midi keyboard, you can find audio interfaces with midi din connectors on them so that you can skip buying a new midi controller.

Ok thank you! I have mpk mini so I will go for usb hub.
Just another question. How can I use different midi controllers plugged into one iPad? Can I assign one instrument to each controller? Like a rhodes for MPK mini, synth for Nanokey, etc.
(As I do with VST in my computer DAW).

Usb hub has multiple usb slots, plug away. You can assign a controller per app i f you wish, use midiflow or midibridge app and you can do all sorts of nifty things.
Which music App listens to the midi commands from which controller is determined by a number of factors.
The midi channel set on each controller and music App is the basic method for controlling this.
Do the music Apps allow you to configure the midi channel or have midi learn capabilities, are they fixed or are they Omni mode (this last will complicate things) ?
The midi controllers usually allow you to set the midi channel.
For more complex setups (one controller split to control multiple Apps as an example), may require something like MidiBridge.
