What do people think of the Pignose as a portable battery powered amp?
Here's a link to it on Amazon:

Supposedly used by Zappa for the "Apostrophe" solo...
I have one, but really for guitar - I wouldn't use it for full range material though (and it breaks up pretty easily which is good for guitarists who want that but not really for general full range material).
For practicing guitar only, it's not bad. If you want to run any other instruments then find a portable full frequency speaker system. I also use an older home audio system with a sub-woofer that can be run off of a battery. Works great for low volume outdoor gigs.
I think it's great for a certain tone. Not very loud although I saw a friend busking in Amsterdam with one and he made a killing. I have the hog 30 bass amp. Lasts 6 hours and is really loud. I use it for my guitar some times, and my iPad at others. That is loud.

I think I'll patiently wait for a Minirig.
Back in the 70s when it first came out everyone had to have a Pignose, they were a ton of fun. When I picked guitar back up 2 years ago it was on the top of my list, but I never got one. Just too many things available today unless you have to have that unique sound. Paid 10 dollars more (at the time) and got a Mustang I for a practice amp. This year I added a THR-10C as my portable Amp and its the primary hardware amp I use now. I don't gig, just trying to learn to record.
The THR10 is also a great stereo speaker for use with the iPad amp sims that I use most of the time now along with any other Music App on the iPad. The THR10 is a perfect addition for both Guitar players and iPad musicians that want to go portable IMHO, I really love mine.
Yeah, kind of agree with the above. Even into the 1990's, the Pignose was one of the few passable options for a portable amplifier. Nowadays, there have been crazy improvements in both (a) the sound of smaller speakers; and (b) modelling technology, so there are tons of portable speaker options, and many of them sound better than I recall a Pignose sounding.
Awesome topic!
I have an older Pignose but have never gotten it to charge right.
For most things, the Crate Acoustic 125d sounds good, but no battery.
A lot of the time, I'm playing with other musicians, a small Honda generator can work quiet wonders
If you're after versatility I think micro cube is better. I never owned pig nose but always associate it with distorted sounds. Roland also has cube street which has added xlr in for a mic and full range speakers for crisp sound. I'm currently contemplating replacing micro cube's speaker to a full range car variety. And believe it or not last night I bought an active car sub to replace my old one in my busking rig. More bassssssss!
