Live Jam with Ampify Launchpad and Groove Rider 2 [with LaunchPad Pro and APC 40]

Groove Rider 2 supporting APC 40! @jimpavloff as usual has done an excellent job with APC 40 support. It works as well as it does with Ableton Live. Seamless.

Here's a 2-step Garage jam. I'm slinging loops with LaunchPad pro controlling Ampify Launchpad, and APC 40 controlling GR-2. I also improvise a little flute and launch pattern variations in Playbeat 4 with the Keystep.

There are 4 tracks in GR-2:

Rhodes (sound font)
Sub bass (sound font)
Flute (sound font)
Drum (Playbeat 4)

The rest are loops in Launchpad.

It's hard to capture everything in the video as I suck at editing. But it gives you an idea of what is possible.

This is now my set up for non-traditional DJing with iPad. So much fun. Thank you @jimpavloff!

  • Nice work and nice setup

  • Thanks for sharing man, always cool to see actual usage. Nice sounding as well.

  • Great jam!
So the main stems/loops are in the Launchpad app?

  • Great, Inspiring...

    Thanks..

Hey, you inspired me to trying to set up something similar but I only have one Launchpad so GRII has to wait or I might try to use the old iPad Air as a controller only, somehow.

I'm very bad with setting things up but even a little test was fun.
Now I have three different sound cards going into an old mixer (no usb) so it's a lot to keep track of. Thank the tech nerds 🔬🧠 for Ableton Link.

    Edit: typos and stupidity corrected.

  • Thank you @johnfromberkeley, @Pxlhg, @rs2000, @RajahP!

    @Pxlhg, That is awesome!

Launchpad app was made for Launch Pad pro. It is perfect for mixed DJing. I’ve combined it with Pioneer FLX-4 ableton linked together on stage a couple of times. Groovebox, Blocswave, Launchpad, Launchpad Pro are incredible together. One of the greatest combos for creating live performances on iPad. So simple and easy but yet so powerful.

APC 40 is now the same with GR-2 which makes it a great candidate for live performance since you can seamlessly switch or mix between projects.

@rs2000 That is correct. Most loops are from a stock session in Launchpad being triggered by Launchpad Pro. The Launchpad pro is exclusively controlling Launchpad and APC40 exclusively controlling GR-2. So I’m mixing the 4 tracks I created on GR-2 myself with the loops in Launchpad.

    Cheers!

Just to clarify: the LaunchPad Mini Mk3 works fine with Launchpad app, and JimAudio GRII, but I only have one and you can't run 2 different apps simultaneously, or, if you can I don't know how. It does not have all the features the pro do but still very usable. You make it sound like you need the Pro (are you hired by Novation? (joking)) and that's not correct.🤪🙃😁

🤣 Definitely not my intention. You’re absolutely right.

  • Amazing! Great jam!

  • Cool setups guys @reezygle and @Pxlhg !

@reezygle it took me a minute to realize the top edge of your Launchpad is hiding under the edge of your desk. I had to go full screen to see properly. lol I was like “What model Launchpad IS ThAT?” 🤣

  • Very inspiring, thanks for sharing!

  • Thank you @kyrillik, @Edward_Alexander, @Squishy!

@Edward_Alexander :D They both happen to fit perfectly together in a keyboard tray under the desk.

Every time there is an update for Launchpad app, I keep hoping it is Auv3… I will surely subscribe for their premium, if..
Did those vocals come from one of their packs? Their ‘Acoustic Songwriter’ pack is a classic..

I actually prefer the stand alone for Launchpad. I can see AUv3 being handy for production but for live performance stand alone is more solid IMHO. The stand alone IAA for both GR-2 and Launchpad work great with AUM and Ableton Link, including transport (start/stop). Here I’ve got both in AUM for master volume control and recording the performance.

Yes the vocals and other LP loops are from the Launchpad’s Twilight Crossings pack. They have some great loops and sounds across the board. I do have premium subscription. It’s a great resource for live performance.

  • Smooth, laidback and nice. Great groove to start the weekend. Happy Friday.

  • Thank you @Paulieworld! Happy Friday indeed.

Makes sense.. State saving is a plus in auv3…
How about a midi import from Playbeat 4? GR2’s piano roll can add so much for imported midi, Probability, fills etc..
    Twilight Crossing is mine..
    Thanks..

Possible. Yup I’m very familiar with GR-2’s piano roll. But I think PB4 does all that itself and it’s very easy to control and trigger different things with just a midi keyboard. For live I prefer that.

Pulling the midi in for Pure Acid drums in GR-2 would be cool though. I might give it a shot.

    Twilight Crossing is mine..
    Thanks..

    You’re very welcome.

  • Nice man! I'll have to play around with the Launchpad app more.

Looks like I finally need to pick up GR-2 as well. How well does the Launchpad work with GR-2?

Thank you! Launchpad Pro works seamlessly with GR-2 as well.

Someone on my YouTube channel asked if I had tried to hook up both Launchpad Pro and APC 40 to only GR-2. Tried it a little while ago and they work great together. They compliment each other. I’ll work on a live jam with the 2 controllers and just GR-2 and will post when I get a chance.

  • Cool stuff, and that's quite the nifty setup!

The amplify apps are very underrated. I have a very soft spot for BlocsWave. It helped get me out of a bit of a multi-year slump.

Thank you for listening @klownshed! Couldn’t agree more on the Ampify apps.

  • So many buttons, screens, things to go wrong but you make it look easy… very enjoyable 👍

Thank you Tony! It’s almost like playing an instrument. With practice you get into a flow where you don’t have to think too much about what you’re doing. It’s like getting muscle memory.

Appreciate you taking the time to watch and listen.

  • It sounds really good!

Digging your set up. Inspiring stuff bro!
