ASCENSION / #91

Very satisfied with this one. I listen to my mixes on AudioEngine 5’s. I know they’re not neutral monitors, but they sound so clear I cannot listen on anything else these days. They’re BT but the lag is manageable for remastering. Totally recommend these to anyone seeking a great all round BT monitor. Price around $300, I think.

Mostly, I’m using MIXBOX these days for remastering. I find this easy to use with great clarity and beautiful array of effects and gui.

Well, I wonder if it will come across ok on what you listen with. Wishing all well in these parlous times.

Also my favorite cover design to date.

  • Everything sounds fine on my headphones. I wasn’t familiar with the term BT, but I’m guessing that means Bluetooth based on the context. This is the first thing I’m listening to this morning. Nice. Goes well with my coffee. Nothing fancy, just some Folgers with one extra scoop. Just the way I like it.

I enjoyed all tracks. A few stand out. Ascension sounded like piano/bass duet, but with a bowed bass. I don’t hear that very often in a Jazz format. Kolkata was a nice unexpected “ethnic” sounding piece, whatever that means. However, it sounded unfinished to me. I liked when the other voices came in, but I was hoping for a strong, well defined melody over the top. I’m hearing a nice, smooth trumpet or maybe some other exotic sounding instrument. Flywheel was the most Monk-like song to me. He had a way of playing that no others had. Almost childish and completely carefree. Even his “wrong” notes sounded right.

When I first started this iOS music thing, I bought several “mastering” apps in my never ending quest to “fix it in the mix”. Nothing gave me the results I was looking for so I stopped using them. I just try to get as much as I can from the individual tracks using volume, panning, and EQ. I use a lot of sample based material. Unfortunately, a lot of that stuff has undesirable things baked into the sound. I use an app called MagicDeathEye Stereo to compress things to cover up the glitches. I like it because it’s very simple, only two controls that seem to make any difference. Believe it or not, I actually spend a lot of time making tiny little tweaks. I’m probably the only person that hears them amongst the chaos.

I just finished something I called End Of Days. I was very pissed off at the time, and it sounds like it. Not at any specific individuals, but at mankind as a whole. For some reason, we humans seem to need leaders. Unfortunately, that profession seems to attract mediocre, attention-seeking, self-serving people. It’s not a left or right thing. Both sides have their own superstars. Someone once said “Government is Hollywood for dumb, ugly people”. I strongly agree. However, we woke up this morning to a beautiful day, so we dodged the bullet… so far. Give it time. They will eventually succeed. I’m thinking Planet of the Apes.

Yesterday we went to our town’s annual festival. We played bingo and listened to the musical stylings of “Whisky Fist”. They sounded exactly as you would expect. I would have had a few beers, but at $10 apiece I decided to pass. Looks like another nice day here and I plan to work on another Death Metal track. It just fits my mood. I’ll get over it. I’m trying to think of something new and different. Maybe some hardcore polka music. I’ll call it Apolkalypse. Yeah… that’s the ticket.

    Keep on trucking!

  • Mike, people have no idea what they’re missing if they don’t stop and listen to a “Levy” album every now and then. Thank you for the continuous gift of music!

Brilliant work as always. I absolutely love Ascension the track!

  • Thx for listening @Paulieworld. I agree about Kolkata. The change of pace worked so well I used it. Just think of it as ambient.

Thank you for the praise @Edward_Alexander. Hope all is going good.
