Multistrip touch MIDI fader?

Wanted:

16 (12 minimum) touch (not physical) strips with marker LEDs arrayed side by side like a mixer console. Smallish, so it's portable. MIDI over USB, though Bluetooth would be a welcome addition. Capable of receiving loopback to set the valued of the controls and LEDs. No frills. No knobs, no keyboard, no strikepads.

These strips exist in smaller sets. The Roli Seaboard has two of them instead of hardware mod wheels. From time to time you see something like it sold as a single piece.

Does this wanted configuration exist? I mean, it's not that hard. I could build one if I had to, based on an Arduino. I could also get an Erae, but... meh? Overkill.

Or does this just come down to "use another iPad, you idiot"?

What host app do you want to use with this? Which host apps send loop back messages? This is probably the biggest problem, don't think AUM can do that, for example.

I have successfully done loopback with LP controls running in AUM, and a MidiFighter Twister.

I'm curious what you'd use for the strips. I've mucked around with linear ribbon sensors a little bit, but they seemed a little flakey to get accurate readings from. Probably I just didn't try hard enough.

Not that I'm going to try to build yet another thing I'll just end up throwing into a drawer if I can help myself, but I'm curious if you know of other strip type control options.

It does seem like a controller like this would be useful.

  • I'm thinking electrostatic, like what the Montage now uses. Or that single-strip USB widget that someone came up with a few years ago.

I've thought about DIY, too, but the electrostatic strips don't seem to be easy to get in the preferred form factor.

  • The k-mix has this in its midi mode, but only has 9 faders. Just mentioning it because it has neat light-up touch faders strips.

  • Ah, yeah. I'd forgotten about that one, and it is nearly perfect, though spendy. Really unfortunate that it's been discontinued. That company has been pretty quiet since Mcmillen died. His stuff was unique.
