Stem Separation - Best Results
I’m sure I read a fairly recent thread where people started sharing the latest and greatest on stem separation apps/software that delivered great clean results but I’m damned if I can find it using search - maybe it wasn’t on here.
Links and thoughts on what’s currently good appreciated.

The best on Desktop is Stemroller it’s Open Source and has an experimental 6 separate stems of separation.
I imagine a lot of these tools use the same open source model, Demucs by Facebook.
Have never seen anything converging on perfection.
Pretty good for analysis though; I use to have a harder time hearing nuances of bass performances before stems, for example.
If you’re on iOS, Moises is about the only app I’ve gotten semi-decent results from. I’ve also tried fadr.com or lalal.ai which are browser based. The results vary and I’ve found that running your samples through these different apps/sites works better or worse depending on the complexity of the audio input.
I guess it also depends on your use case. For me, I’m typically looking for stem separation of samples to use in Koala or Drambo. Last thing I’ll add is that all of these options have given me at least a usable separated stem portion to work with.
I gotta say, and you do have to have a way to get whatever you’re using into wave file, Logic Pro.
Thanks for the steamroller link, will give that one a try.
If you have koala, there is a stem split option in the tools list. Splits to 4 parts.
I was going to mention Koala's stem splitter (it's in the Samurai addon iap, iirc)
And also wanted to ask about it's quality compared to others. I use it from time to time just messing around at this point. Most sound usable, some little flutters of other parts here and there... But I havent used any other separators so I don't know how it compares
@PapaBPoppin: I haven’t used enough stem splitters to know how koala compares. Heard a YouTube tester say koala works as well as the online ones. I’ve only used one other and koala was better than that one. I’ve used koalas on a number of tracks to try and just get the drum beat, some results are usable. Do have some bleed throughs often though. I will play around with steamroller this weekend if I can, interested in trying this one out.
I have this, no idea how it compares to others haven’t used it (there’s also a AUv3 version I think) https://apps.apple.com/us/app/lets-unmix/id1500367180
I haven't used a lot of stem splitters, but Koala is serviceable, and Logic (if you use an iPad that supports its stem splitting) is king. Just my two cents. Ymmv.
I still use RipX on the desktop.
It's a paid app which I use mainly because I can a queue up whole batch of tracks to run overnight. I'm mainly interested in drum removal, which it does a good job on.
I bought it a long time ago and all updates since then have been free. Over time RipX has positioned itself as a kind of re-mix DAW which is way more than I want or need, but until they ask for an upped fee for a all the stuff I dont use I'll stick with it!
Oh, they have Vision Pro version too. Anyone?
Can I make a suggestion? I’ve always loved this old record. For those with the tools, and willing to participate, could you do a full stem separation (including Drums) and share the results for the community to compare results? Who knows, perhaps we could eventually even have a remix competition and try test material from other forum members to compare results?
I’m kind bummed everything is a cloud based subscription other than “let’s Unmix” which is a decent device based separation tool. My issue is that it’s spleeter based algorithm and there’s way better ones now like demucs. Why hasn’t anyone made an app that leverages both demucs and your iPhones hardware to do the lifting instead of always relying on some cloud service to do it. It’s so irritating to me. Why do I have a beefy device and you’re just going to offload the processing and charge me for it.
Oh right because it’s micro transaction economy instead of actually using the expensive hardware I paid for
Are you "Billy Paul" or are you the copyright holder of that material? Because without permission from the rights holder this could get one into a lot of legal troubles.
I’ve tried quite a few over the past few years. In my opinion, Lalal.ai is the best — they even have an iOS app. I mainly use it to isolate drum tracks.
Obviously not, it’s an exercise in hearing the results of various stem separation software. I’m sure no one here would attempt using the results for commercial gain or performance without seeking permission from the rights holder and, if they do, that’s on them.
There are plenty of recordings in the public domain, so might be better to use them for expermentation instead.
Thanks for sharing an opinion but I’d like to hear the results of the various available options on a track I’m familiar with.
Also, I’m sorry for whatever or whoever hurt you and made you this way.
After numerous tests, including with other software, I can only recommend the Stem function in Logic Pro for iPad.
The algorithm in the current Logic version 2.2 is already very impressive. Logic can now separate up to six different instruments or groups (vocals, drums, bass, guitars, piano, other instruments).
Exactly this. Logic Pro is the cleanest of all stem splitting on iPad, which is only a fiver monthly. That sub also includes Mastering Assistant and, well, a whole-ass top-quality DAW. 😂
$5 monthly sub for a whole ass daw? ✋😠
$5 monthly sub for kickass stem separator that happens to include a whole ass daw? ☝️😍👍
@jwmmakerofmusic : But of course !!!!
Is stem separation also in the Mac version of Logic or just in the subbed iPad version?
Both 👍
Lovely thank you.
Can someone confirm Logic Pro Version 2.2 For iPad can separate stems down to the kit level and can it separate lead and backing vocals like Moises does? The version description is a little ambiguous
That doesn’t look like it’s Logic?
…
I sure hope Billy Paul isn’t posting here because he passed away.
Moises of course, that was my reply
I wanted make a head to head comparison with Logic Pro 2.2 and downloded Moises therefore…
free version does not give the best results
350.- Euro for this app…🤡 ?
