Pride of Scotland- Simple Minds still has it in 2025

Jim Kerr is hilarious in the final where the audience keep singing…😁.

  • Jim Kerr could have done with a slightly longer jersey I think to cover the beer belly popping out. He looks like he shopped for his stage outfit at Primark & it wouldn’t have looked out of place if Charlie Burchill had a pipe in his mouth. I had the chance to go - didn’t take it & I’m glad. It looked pretty dull for the most part from what I saw & the crowd were not bouncing. More Iike an episode of Still Game. They are disassembled & past it and that is the truth. There was no Mel Gaynor and no Derek Forbes.
I did see them at the Glasgow Barrowlands several decades ago and that was truly amazing - there is a sadly a stark contrast to now. It’s not a charity & the tickets were not cheap.

  • Ah that opening riff from Waterfront takes me right back.

Sorry to hear about your experience @robosardine!

I have seen Simple Minds numerous times both at stadiums and smaller venues and inevitably, as both the artists and audience get older, much of the youthful energy goes away. I do think however that the duo is aging with dignity, and that aging is part of the life journey for artists as well. Their craftmanship remains solid, but I also do miss some of the musicians of their past history.

I do hope you get great future music experiences from live shows be it it with Simple Minds, or other bands!

    Have a continued great summer!

    😊

  • @DMfan That was a very gracious response to a starkly contrasting opinion

I don't know what I hate more. Watching myself grow old, or watching all the bands I like grow old. I think the latter.

(Not a comment on Simple Minds or the video here. Just a loose thought.)

    The latter IMO.

What totally creeps me out though are artists getting older, seriously trying to dress and behave on stage like they are 19 again. I much rather have a properly dressed and mature person being proud of and doing their old hits calmly and with a happy smile still feeling the love from the audience, than someone trying to fit into their clothes from 30-40 years ago jumping frantically up and and down aiming for a heart attack.

  • I just watched Judas Priest doing Black Sabbath's War Pigs (posted on Black Sabbath's own YouTube channel) and it sounds totally awesome but to see these grandpa figures "jumping" around in leather and metal outfits just make me sick, it's really ridiculous and clownish.
    It's worth the listening though.

Simple Minds have never been my cup of tea, nor the band.

Hope you have a great summer too.

Speaking of gracious and good manners etc and Primark - have any of you been seen this guy - Troy Hawke? I’ve been having a good laugh watching him recently.

I often feel the biggest mistake they made was not splitting up and benefitting from the filthy reunion lucra.
Although they are playing bigger venues/slots now, over the years I’ve seen them struggle to sell venues while bands that never even sold 1/4 of the records they have coin it in on the reunion trip.
SM are the band I find myself arguing with folks about the most (well them and another Scottish band coincidently, the shamen.)
Mostly due to folks never having heard anything but the big hits.
From Life in a day to new gold dream, 5 albums, 3 and a 1/2 years, phenomenal and unmatched in my opinion.

  • I used to listen to this one (The American) over and over back in the day - still love it.
