Getting Audio/midi from Windows to Ipad

hi. Ive just given in and bought myself a budget laptop after 15 years ipad only. I now have a lot of nice vsts (spitfire stuff etc) on my pc that i would like to record into Logic Pro on my iPad Pro. Apologies in advance that im not well versed in this stuff.

I realise this is the opposite to most people’s needs when transporting or recording between ipad and pc. Does anyone have any advice or is there a consensus on the best way to do things? I would like a reliable way to do both really.

My original plan was to mixdown a track on Logic Pro ipad export to pc, then use that rough mixdown as a guide track to record some vst parts on pc, and export them as audio stems back to Logic Pro on ipad to finish the track. But it would be nice if theres a way of recording pc vsts directly into Logic Pro on my ipad, without introducing problematic latency. I can think of a few methods:

  • I could always use the pc as an instrument i suppose, as ive done with iPads before, and plug the headphone out into my audio interface then into the ipad (am i being stupid thinking of using the headphone out here?). Would that be a reasonable idea or is that too simple?

Edit: oh wait… is this going to destroy my interface or something re line level input

  • I know there is Studiomux but i dont know how finicky that is or if it works well for people.

  • iconnectaudio4 interface. Which i sold a few months ago before getting the pc… i dont know what people’s experiences have been like with this.

Sorry for being dim but what is it thats special about the iconnectaudio stuff in connecting pc and ios; ive just realised my first suggestion is the same isnt it? Just plugging the pc into any audio interface. It’s new to me.

    I don’t know if a few ms (10-15) latency could be an issue but SonoBus could be useful. I used it to connect iPad and Linux laptop via LAN (Gigabit Ethernet, no WiFi).

    I don't think it would do any harm. However, you would need a cable that can take the Left and Right headphone out and put one or both onto the mic line. Headphone jacks have three parts: Left Out, Right Out, and Mic In. Nothing comes out on the Mic line and that's what you need to input to the interface. Output would be mono.

    Not worth the trouble. It's full of problems and latency. Sonobus can work OK over ethernet, but has some latency even then.

    They are unique in that they can act as an interface for more than one device at a time and take care of the routing between them at low latency. Lewitt Connect 6 can do this too. Maybe one from Motu, if I remember correctly.

    Without such an interface, a headphone out > microphone in adapter, two audio interfaces connected together, or something like Sonobus are the only answers, and none of those is ideal.

    There are at least a few exhaustive threads here on this subject if you can find them. That's not easy with the search tools available, unfortunately.

    Oh, you said MIDI too. That's another can of worms.

    If your audio interface has MIDI DIN input, then a USB to MIDI cables are inexpensive and generally reliable. RTP MIDI can work too, but sucks and can be a pain to set up.
