Please help with my drum journey

Greetings all,

Spent a bit more time with Loopy Pro last night and am just loving it. My plan is to use it for musical wallpaper type solo gigs where the music isn't the main focus - i.e. restaurant, bar/grill type settings. The songs played would have a fairly straightforward form, with a couple of different sections, etc...

I've got guitar/bass/keys/vocals covered, but I need drums. I found the template depicted in this video: which has two tracks for drums as a starting place.

I'm also looking at things like groove rider 2 (and gr16), Drum Perfect and a few other AUv3 plug-in type apps.

I'd kind of like to avoid the journey of buying a bunch of apps only to find they're too complicated to take care of my relatively simple needs. I would need something like Loopy Pro that works for the simple stuff, but also has the depth if I want to dive in.

Or would simple drum tracks like the one shown in the aforementioned template be good enough? I was thinking I could assemble a library of different patterns with my DAW, record them and loop them?

Thanks for any insight.

    I'll have a look, thanks.

  • It may help to break your needs down into a few areas and then approach what will work best for you in each area.

    • Sounds: Acoustic, Electronic, or both? If acoustic, how realistic do you need?
    • Sequencing: How important are variation, fills, etc.? How up are you for sequencing your own patterns?
    • Pre-Packed sounds and loops: Do you prefer to have a bunch of stock patterns to choose from as need arises?
    • Tempo variety: if you need a lot of variety of tempos, midi looping is probably preferable to audio looping.
    • Integration: how important is it to have just one integrated app vs. perhaps stringing a few together?

The best answers could vary a lot based on what's most important to you.

That said, unless you need very detailed acoustic drums, it's hard to go wrong with Patterning 3. Sequencing it can be quite simple or very deep.

If you need more detailed acoustic drums, then Octachron for sequencing and One Shot or Drum Perfect Pro is a good combination combining ease of sequencing with deep quality sounds.

But ... those two directions are just what I prefer. They're made without any understanding of the details of what you need.

Thanks for the reply and asking these questions.

I’d like convincing acoustic drum sounds, but I’m not wrapped up looking for perfection. As far as sequencing, I can do it, but I don’t want to spend a lot of time on it; my focus is on guitar/bass/keys, so pre-canned usable loops would be best.

Ideally I’d like a single drum app as I want to spend most of time learning and programming loopy pro and playing the instruments I’m most comfortable with.

Agree with everything here but if if you wanna save some $ and have a super rock solid drum app, Hammerhead is clutch. Used that for a while before investing in Patterning 3. Still use it on my iPhone.

    Thanks for the suggestion.

  • Another great question, but just to start you need these (just kidding, but I’m a drum machine lover so I love these)

Acoustic: Drumperfect pro, one shot! (Klevgrand)

    Electronic/sequencer: BATTALION!!!!!!!! (Unfiltered Audio),Patterning 3, Axon 3, hammerhead, @brambos apps

(Both: digistix 2, eg pulse, one shot, battalion)

    Sequencers: @TasTax OctaChron, @brambos Rozeta , @ElliottGarage Eg nodes

    Hope it helps

  • After using a few drum machine apps, I decided to use audio loops of drum tracks to accompany my live looping elements (keyboard, vocoder, synths).

My project in Loopy Pro has about 30 different drum “songs” , each of which is two separate loops. The first loop is the "bottom" (usually kick, or kick plus snare) and the second loop (hats, snare, etc.). This way I can bring in and out drum parts. I can also swap bottoms/tops of different songs, so sometimes i'll have some disco-style hand-percussion playing on top with a hip hop boom bap kick snare. Great fun.

Ok...but doesn't that get boring hearing the same 4 bar loop throughout the whole song? To address this, I have the drums and main audio going through a lot of different rythmic effects. So, for the chorus, I can apply some glitchy effects that double up the down beat. For the break, I might apply a "slow" effect and drop everything but the hats.

Thanks for sharing your process. Always good to hear how people are making things work.

  • patterning 3 all the way, i have worked with many drum machine apps, patterning is amazing. BUT for live setup, you might be better off with Digitakt II, not cheap but king of desk DMS.

  • Forgot Lumbeat I think? They are all amazing but Rock DM is really great for rock ; but they are all good , haven’t heard one bad Lumbeat

  • Does anyone knows a free drum sequencer on iOS that can load user samples. I need swing (%) integrated and a UI that look like a beatstep(eg arturia beatstep)
