R.I.P. Cleo Laine

One critic said that she was one of Britain's two great contributions to jazz - the other being gin.
And the Sunday Times once described her as "quite simply the best singer in the world."

A great singer… the really sad thing is that she and her husband Johnny Dankworth were often on British main stream TV in the 70s and 80s (or so my memory tells me).
The chance of a jazz singer and saxophonist appearing on prime time tv now… 🤔
I saw Cleo live in the early/mid 80s, with Johnny, at Snape Maltings (Suffolk, UK). Pretty vague memory now, 40 years ago, and Cleo was a veteran then!
My Dad used to have her on the stereo all time when I was a lad. RIP.
My dad (we!) used to listen to Clio on the BBC Light programme during the 50s, there was no such luxury as stereo back then, Cleo was a really great singer but I could never stand listening the all that fast scat singing, I think it must be an acquired taste, I like jazz but not that kind of jazz.
She had a good long healthy career and it’s a shame she has away.
R.I.P to a great singer.
Giant talent
“Dankworth” is one helluvah last name! I’ve never heard of Cleo but just added some stuff to my Mangione playlist, it’s turning into a jazz filled celebration of life weekend!
Rest in Peace
Indeed. She made it to 97 and was apparently even performing in her 90's.
