What the hell did I just see! Can anybody explain?
I probably should have posted this in the Other section, but there are crazy people over there. This place has cool, friendly, creative people that I would rather hang with. Anyway… I just saw something.
My wife and I were on our way home from lunch at Emilio’s Tapas. It was great. We had a bottle of super dark red Tempranillo. The good stuff that makes you pucker up. Also had garlic chicken with fresh red grapes, cold shrimp with three sauces, spicy hot potato salad in tomato sauce, and beef brochette (rare) with creamy horseradish sauce and sautéed red onions. But I digress…
We were driving westbound on Route 38 (Roosevelt Road if you are a local), heading out of Hillside. My wife said… look at all those bikers! Heading eastbound were a group of bikers. These were not outlaws. These were young dudes riding dirt bikes. Two strokers. The group kept getting bigger and bigger. They just kept coming. I couldn’t believe it. There must have been 10,000 bikers! Many of them were doing long, extended wheelies and waving to us. It was very cool to see. Traffic was stopped for at least 15 minutes. When traffic started up again, they were still coming. I have never seen anything like it.
There was a huge funeral blocking traffic at Mount Carmel, where Al Capone is buried, but that didn’t seem to fit the situation. What was going on here? Does anybody have any idea? We may have been witnessing something special. We would love to know what it was.

Google Gemini reports:
While there don't appear to be any specific recent bike events centered on Route 38 (Roosevelt Road) heading out of Hillside, there are a number of major cycling events that take place in the broader Chicago area. These include:
* Chicago Grit: A series of criterium races held over multiple days in different Chicagoland communities.
* Bike the Drive: An annual event where cyclists can ride on DuSable Lake Shore Drive, a major highway, without car traffic. Roosevelt Road is mentioned as a checkpoint during this event.
* Chicago Critical Mass: A large group ride that takes place on the last Friday of every month.
It's also worth noting that there have been bike-related events in other places named "Hillside," such as a past "Bike Rodeo & Ride" in Hillside, New Jersey, and the "Haunted Hillside Relay Race" in Killington, Vermont. However, these are not near Chicago.
It’s not DuSable… it’s Lake Shore Drive. That was added recently to appease some wankers. Driving north on LSD was a rite of passage for a horny teenage boy and his pretty young date. Did that a few times, but didn’t get laid. There was a great song by Alliota, Haynes, and Jeremiah called Lake Shore Drive. They broke up and became Acme Thunder Band. Me and Bobby auditioned for them but didn’t get the gig. They were assholes, and smelled like Aqua Velva. Anyway, they had one cool song that has become a Chicago legend.
Unlikely since it's so far away, but maybe on their way to ...

Probably not. If so, they would have turned left at Rockford. In any case, something big was happening. If I was a young, wild crazy dude, I would have loved to be in the pack. My wife even said, that would be so cool. I would love to do big, long wheelies and wave to the crowd. Maybe in my next life!
Looks cool! TetsuoooooooOOOOhhhHHHH!
They might be of the same family as the Perfectly Normal Beasts in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Just appearing through a gate for a few kilometers and disappearing through another gate into another world.
This is exactly what I saw! Young, wild crazy dudes riding their dirt bikes, doing big, long wheelies. Damn… if I was a strong, young man, I would be riding big with my bitch. Don’t tell her I said that! Although, she might actually dig it. Go out in a blaze of glory.
Kinda neat, reminds me a little of my toe dip in skate culture way back in the day.
That's a great story btw. Got any more from that era?
@bluegroove I could chat all night. The 80s and 90s were good times in Chicago. We had some great rock clubs. I would make a complete fool of myself on stage… and made 50 bucks for the night. I would love to do it again, but this arthritis is killing me. Now I just do silly nonsense on this iPad. Ahhh, memories.
I had a custom built Honda 750 (1972) for a about three years (87-90). It was the three rainiest summers ever recorded in Sweden (joking but it felt like so) Damn I miss it sometimes, especially warm summer days (rare here).
My brother builds custom bikes and below is my favourite of his, this one is sold now. 🥲

I definitely have an affinity for early Wax Trax, still listen to a bunch from the 80s and early 90s.
This is from my hometown, Norrköping (nicknamed: Peking) and every year on labour day it's a parade of bikes, I drove it one year, loads of fun. It used to be bikes only but now it's American muscle cars as well. The bikes have lessened a lot, it used to be massive. First rides the local gang (not a 1% club) Peking Outlaws (est.1967). It's hard to find a good video but this is okay and from this year. (I did not see it live)

We get this in Philli. Not just dirt bikes, but 4 wheelers too…on the highway, popping wheelies and slowing traffic. It was cool the first time getting stuck in that mess, but it’s annoying and dangerous. Hopefully they’ll learn their lesson when their wheel bearings and axles prematurely fail from the pavement stress, as opposed to an accident or road rage.
I’m in Rockford (Machesney Park, northeast of town.)
We see this all the time albeit smaller groups. Drives the get off my lawners crazy.
2 stroke dirt bikes and 4 wheelers popping wheelies. Looks like a shit load of fun to me.
