Old college composition/recording restored using iPad audio tools.

One of the ways I’m putting all the great iPad audio plug-ins to use is restoring old tape recordings made years ago, some with good results.

This is a really OLD composition/recording I made back in college. l took a composition class one semester and we were asked to write 2 songs using the keyboard workstation in the school MIDI lab. We were each given a picture and words to think about, and told to write a song to fit them. This song was made for a sunset scene. It’s easy listening genre I suppose.

Really surprised how this recording restoration turned out. Many plug-ins used. The Brusfri plugin took out the tape hiss like magic - wonderful plugin for restoring old tape recordings.

  • Very chill song. Sounds like a fun assignment and a fun restoration project.
Could you post the original recording in some capacity? It would be cool to hear the difference.

  • Yes, interested in a before and after. I’ve been remastering a bunch of stuff using Mixbox. It’s made a big difference (I think). Nice to hear anything you do @Dav. Hope all is well.

  • I’m so glad you had this recording to recapture the essence of your younger musical life.

Your progression with IOS tools is impressive. The democratization of art is a wonderful result of
“Moore’s Law” making really powerful technology and software solutions available at prices most
middle class musicians can afford. You no longer need to pray for a record album to express an
interest in making money from your work. You can effectively create finished goods at home.

Of course, you keyboard skills give you an advantage over so many of us that didn’t take those piano lessons
seriously or do the work required to play with the skills of studio musicians.

Keep sharing your journey as you discover more and more capabilities on your iPad.

  • I have hundreds of old multitrack tapes I'd love to be able to convert to mutitrack digital files, but I cannot imagine I'll ever have the time to engage in such a task. Good on you for this, @Dav.

  • Sounds really great but it would be nice to know more about your whole process. I, too, have ancient tapes going back to the Stone Age . I doubt that anything could resurrect them now.

But I’ve seen an interesting development with Suno (don’t hate me) called ‘covers’ that lets you upload your own music and it re-performs it to your own specifications . Might be interesting for old tapes.

  • Longer with a flugelhorn solo please ☹️

Hey, thanks for listening everyone. After I remix the 2nd song I will do a before and after post and list the process I went through. @MrStochastic, that is cool idea about Suno redoing a song. Didn’t know about that.

What were some of the apps/tools you used to “remaster” the old recordings?

Update - I see you mentioned MixBox… any other apps in particular?

Yes, I used these, mostly subtle - In addition to mixbox saturation I have these in my mixing chain which I turn on/off while playing with the recordings: Brusfri, RSS CLI compressor, couple of RSS EQ plugins, RRS TB equalizer & TB MBC, TB reverb, QuadroSphere, Type B exciter, Spatializer, luxe, RX950. I used these in AUM so I could control the volume/dynamic while recording the mix. Lastly I used Lurssen Mastering console. After that I opened the recording in AudioShare to covert it a lower quality and smaller file that can be pasted on the forum.
