Also @cem_olcay AutoFills and Binarythmic work great with Punchline. You can use a single Autofills instance as a full on drum sequencer for Punchline, and many other drum apps.
Yes, Punchline has a decent midi (in) implementation but can probably be improved, if you have issues or feedback don’t hesitate to let me know!
In addition to the FX parameters, there's an update coming soon with additional sample import options (mp3, flac, opus, aiff), along with some bug fixes (and triplet retrigs!).
Soundformore also recently did a nice intro tutorial on the basics!
I just released 1.2, which includes Ableton Link support for connecting to your Move, Push, or another Link-enabled device (or a friend with Punchline!). https://charles.pizza/apps/punchline/
@charlesv Awesome update. Apps come a long way. Good stuff
@charlesv
Lovely app!
Big request: pop a little synth in there that works with the p-locks?
That IS a big request.
I think you'd need to have some ADSR, filter, etc all configurable...somewhere. This might make more sense as a different app but it's a good idea! For now feel free to load in synth samples
Just wanted to pop in and say I love this drum machine.
Thanks for the reply. Had to ask but I know I asked way too much!
And don’t get me wrong, I really appreciate what you have done already.
It's a slightly different take on the pocket operator workflow but there's an app called Polaris that offers a Synth engine, coming to iOS soon https://meteaure.com (TestFlight available on their discord)
Thanks for the tip, i have that one on Android, so glad to hear it’s coming to iOS.
Quick question: Does this have MIDI out so it can write MIDI in Cubasis/Garageband, etc? Thanks!
Just midi in (for now)!
Midi Out would be really amazing, specially if it would also include Midi Fx. Love the app too, not just for drums but have had a lot of fun importing melodic kalimba samples
Hey, I see pad colors changed in some of the screenshots posted. How do you change the pad colors?
Also, might be fun if you could long-press a pad to assign a custom avatar for each pad from your own library
Pads are orange in the main app and drum machine AUv3. The blue screenshots are from the FX AUv3 that lets you use the punch-in FX sequences as well as a global sequenced gate
No MIDI FX, but you inspired me! There's a test version with midi coming to Testflight once it's approved. Merry Christmas!
New trait build with a first pass a midi out:
https://charles.pizza/apps/punchline/testflight/
• MIDI Out Implementation
- Notes 36–51 (C2–D#3) trigger the 16 pads; All MIDI is on channel 1; note length is a % of step length.
- Per-sound CCs: four knobs per track (pitch/length/filter/level) on CC 20–83 (pads 0–15, four CCs each). These reflect live knob moves and automation.
- Effects: CC 102–117 toggle effects on/off (value 127 on, 0 off).
Sorry, this is probably a dumb question, but I couldn’t figure this out from the manual or thread. When I am using the effect sequencer, how do I set the effect dials for a particular step so that different steps have different settings?
I think you can hold down the FX button with one hand and use the other hand to set each step or you can double tab on the FX button to lock it then set each individual step. You can also set Pitch , len, Fltr and Lvl for each set when the sequencer is stopped.
Unfortunately, that isn’t working for me.
I hold a step and it says editing step with the step number.
I double-tap fx so that the fx knobs appear. I turn the knob to the value I want .
Double-tap to turn off the fx overdub.
Repeat for other steps.
Start the host transport but the fx don’t change in the steps I edited.
I guess I am doing some basic thing wrong.
Ok well it hard to describe but lets say you want to add effects to the snare drum you select FX with a finger use another finger to select the snare on the highlighted step and with a third finger turn the effect you want to apply to the snare. It takes a while to get use to it

Thanks for taking the time to make that video. I am not sure how to apply what is in the video to what I am trying to do.
I am using the effects plugin and trying to adjust fx per step. I can realtime overdub fx but can’t seem to figure out how to precisely sequence the effects per step.
@charlesv : is this possible?
I think only the parameters that blink while holding a step can be locked per step. That would be the four knobs (Gate, Vol, Freq, Res) plus the two knobs when holding shift (Gate and Prob.)
Thanks.
Hi all, the FX parameters themselves do not automate - only their punch-in. I had it in when testing, but I found it VERY confusing at times why certain things were happening, especially things like delay amounts, causing repitches, etc. For the most part, it seemed like folks would want static parameters. They should be saved per pattern, but they aren't step-editable in the same way the sound parameters are.
I'll give a go at adding it back in a testflight version if folks want to try it out. For reference, that's 4 parameters * 16 instruments, with 16 substeps of resolution, so a single step already has potentially 1024 events, so what's another 256
And yes, in the audio effect plugin, there's not a precise per-effect sequencing like sounds - they're punch-in like in the player, and there is only one "sound" - the gate sequencer.
Thanks for the clarification.
Thank you for the heads up! Just purchased today in anticipation of the update.
Take a look at the testflight build if you can! would love any feedback.
