Connecting H8 Zoom recorder to my Ipad
I have an H8 Zoom recorder that I want to use as an audio interface with loopy pro. The H8 has a headphone jack line out, but the tech at Zoom said I should use the micro usb from the Zoom (which also is where you can supply power and not have to use batteries) and then lightning to my older Ipad. So, I guess I need a micro usb cable to lightning that supports data. Is this all correct? Can anyone post a link to a dongle ( i think it's called) that will power my H8 with a good USB hub and cable (usb micro to lightning). Let me know. Thanks

If your iPad is a lightning iPad, you need a microUSB to USB-A cable for the Zoom (one probably came with the Zoom) and the Apple lightning USB 3 camera adapter (which has a female lightning port for power and USB-A female port that you plug the Zoom or a hub into). If you need to power the Zoom then you also probably want a powered USB hub between the Zoom and the camera adapter.
I spoke to someone at Zoom (not sure if they know what they are talking about) but they said I may not be able to use a hub to power the zoom and also a cable out to ipad as it may cause interference or something. So I can use the micro usb to usb cable that came with the zoom to power it and just add a usb to lightning adapter at the end. Does it have to be made by apple. Can anyone post a link for a suitable usb hub, I am not sure which is the correct item.
Is this the best hub that will go with ipad and H8 zoom? UGREEN Revodok Pro Hub USB C 8 in 1 Dock 4K@60Hz HDMI, Docking Station with USB-A 3.2, USB-A 2.0, 2 x USB-C 3.2, SD/TF Card Reader, PD 100W for MacBook Pro/Air, iPad Pro, XPS, Thinkpad
It's worth it to get the official Adapter, despite the price. Often others don't work, don't work for everything, or work and then stop working at some point. Trust me. Save yourself the grief.
Be careful if you buy from Amazon. Make sure it's actually offered by Apple. Or buy direct from Apple. In the US at least, they have fast, free shipping. They've never steered me wrong.
Two questions I’m not sure: getting this hub, I know I will be able to charge my iPad as I’m using it, but I don’t know if I will be able to somehow use the micro USB from my H8 zoom recorder and also be able to power the zoom at the same time. Also related, the USB cable coming out of the H8 zoom ,what would the other end of that cable need to be that goes into the hub?
It may work to power the H8 if the hub is powered. The manual says that the port can be used to power the device, but it doesn't mention it being able to do both data and power. You'll just have to see.
USB-A, or USB-C. I would go with USB-A as micro USB to USB-A cables are more standard. Be sure to get a cable that can handle data, not just power. Some micro USB to USB-A are only for charging.
You said you will be using an older iPad. You'll be needing the Apple USB-3 Lightning adapter, so you'll be plugging this hub into a USB-A port on the adapter. The Ugreen hub is USB-C, which is good for future-proofing, but bad in this case because you'll need a USB-C to USB-A adapter. Those little adapters tend to wiggle loose. Avoid them in favor of a USB-C to USB-A cable if you go with this hub.
Personally, I'd use a USB-A hub with power and a charging port. You are probably going to want power to the iPad to charge it. Sadly this means two connections to the Apple adapter - one for the hub's host port, and one to supply power (standard USB-A to Lightning charging cable). I don't have specific recommendations, but here's one that might work: https://a.co/d/1CMy20J.
The Zoom recorders I have had are bus-powered when used as an interface.
So I finally got it all working. I am using the H8 Zoom as my interface going into my ipad and I can hear the recordings thru the headphone output or there is a headphone jack line out that can go to a p.a. system. The fact that the line out is headphone jack does that limit the quality of sound going out to the pa system or does the kind of jack not make a big difference?
