Song Of The Month Club - September 2025

What is the Song of the Month Club?

It's a place where musicians come to give and receive feedback on their work. Anyone is welcome, whatever their level of ability.

The spirit of the club is to contribute: if you submit a song for others to comment on, you should also have the courtesy to listen to everyone else's contributions and give as much feedback as possible. Posting a track and not listening and commenting on others is not cool.

The purpose of feedback is to be honest. Essentially you should give your truthful impressions of the song, whether good or bad. Negative feedback, if done in the right spirit and with courtesy, can be the most useful and can help the artist to grow.

All submissions are welcome, don't hesitate if you want to contribute. We like all kinds of music and we are particularly fond of vocals (but of course we still love a great instrumental). If you are thinking of experimenting with vocals this is a good place to get started.

We ask that you only post one song per month in this thread - if you're lucky enough to be able to produce more, then please just submit your strongest material

And finally, iOS is not a requirement for posting here. If you've recorded your song using nothing but a ukulele and a Fostex 4 track, that's fine.

  • My entry for the month, based around a bass part from @Jankun, I added the guitars and vocals. Lyrics in the spoiler.

What you see and what I am
    Two companions hand in hand
This is who we want to be
And you are not the judge of me

    You couldn’t see
    You couldn’t say
You couldn’t look the other way

You decided I shouldn’t be free
You decided to make choices for me

I look at you, a spiteful man
Who would hate because he can
And if you want to hurt me so
You fear the things that you don’t know

    You couldn’t see
    You couldn’t say
You couldn’t look the other way

You decided I shouldn’t be free
You decided to make choices for me

When bigots make a wicked plan
    To control another man
    Silence is the enemy
    Of certitude and empathy

    You couldn’t see
    You couldn’t say
You couldn’t look the other way

You decided I shouldn’t be free
You decided to make choices for me

Great to hear what you've done with the bassline. All different iterations I was lucky to hear and sometimes play on were all great but I am biased as that bass player😉 . Actually, I kind of liked the original track this bass was played for (though I don't think I will ever finish it).
This version is definitely the best. I love the driving energy of both guitars and drums, those complement the bass nicely and your vocals performance and FX treatment . What I love the most on the track are your lyrics, simply spot on. Great reminder for each and anyone of us not to become tyrannic monsters in our own lives.

Here's my submission - a bit of a different one. Lots of chopped and edited vocals and guitar.

  • This is a music track that I improvised on two MIDI keyboards connected to Bitwig Studio on a desktop PC. There the MIDI was routed to Vital Series: Mallets for the marimba, song bells, vibraphone, and glockenspiel; Solo for the cello; Noire for the piano; and Omnisphere and Continua for the background instruments.

After bringing the audio recording into Vegas Pro, I applied the Lurssen Mastering Console plug-in to the audio mix.

    It's titled In-Between.

Specially dig the arpeggiated guitar on the verses. You always nail those!

Thanks! The arpeggio was mainly a way to avoid playing powerchords, glad to hear the idea worked :)

Not the version of the track that I prefer (sorry, I'm dark and sad :p ) but great work making Jankun's bass line "yours". Also I really like how you used the various FXes in this track.

  • Hi Guys.. Its been a while.. This contribution was released about a month ago?.. Enjoy..

Very somber, in the best way. The vocals are impressive, gave me a lower ranged Jim James vibe, instrumentation even similar to something from Tennessee Fire. Seems Sept is the month of the JanKun collabs haha!

Love the chopping of the vocal sample in the intro, really nicely done and it creates a very compelling hooky intro. The background vocal chop is also really cool.

Overall, it's a very enjoyable and interesting track full of compelling sounds.

A graceful and slowly unfolding piece with some beautiful timbres.

Not my genre, so I find it a bit hard to comment but even if not a fan of the vocals I love the way you chopped and stretched them. If something, I don't like how the piano sounds, a bit too dry. But overall a very nice track, catchy and sounding great!

  • (My first contribution here - it's very quiet out there.)
This is an original composition featuring 'backward' guitar. The head and solo were painstakingly arranged/improvised forwards to hopefully sound okay backwards. This was done old school like back in the reel to reel days, ie. the backing was recorded then reversed then main guitar was recorded over the top (which is very strange to do) then reversed back again.

  • @richardyot really like this song, has a real 80s vibe with bags of energy, and I love the abrupt stop in the middle.

@benjaminprofane (as commented before) really unique song with unique vocals.

@DavidEnglish Meditative, relaxing piece with beautiful visuals - what app is that?

@unlink Brilliant! The build up of this piece musically and vocally is insane (in a good way) - maybe things will be all right.

@studs1966 really nice groove with this, especially the bass. Curious about the cool vocals - real, sampled or AI?

I tend to use Astrofox, Magic, and other PC-based visualizers. Then I use video FX plugins inside Vegas Pro to make the graphics more symmetrical and dynamic. Because the video plugins can be adjusted while previewing the music and visuals, I can experiment in real-time to find the FX settings that best match the mood and pace of the music.

Thanks for the detailed reply David. Sadly I’m not on PC. I wonder if something similar can be done on iOS.

Thanks mate.. The vocals are Sampled.. Even when you buy sampled Vocals, you still have to fix them, even if they have been recorded in a studio?.. When some people send me vocals to clean or fix up?.. i have to tell them that i cant polish a turd?.. The more you compress, the more it will bleed through a mix, if its not done right in the first place?.. :)

I love the tension notes in the piano throughout. For me these notes make the song. They give it the tension and mood which is really nice for this song. Very nice choices. I find the vocal a bit off here and there but I'm a perfectionist with vocals. The vocal mix/effects are quite good. I think some more eq could be used to make it belong to the mix a bit better. Cool, moody, emotive track. Very nice.

You had me at hello :D Seriously though, the mallet at the start is so close to one of my favourite songs it had me from the start. The fade on the mallets in particular were very captivating. The warmth in the support pads was impressive. Not sure how many track there are but it's a nice thick base, but still has nice clarity. Solo string sat in the mix and strolled into the mix very nicely. Very nice melodic piece, quite a bit of a Vangelis vibe.

The main riff is great, as well as the solos (some imperfections here and there but nothing that really matters). I really like the guitar sounds, and sounds well balanced and mixed. Nice track!

I love the unison bass and guitar, and all of the guitar tones in the recording, fantastic stuff.

The lead playing is very varied and interesting, with strong dynamics, and the backwards part has that psychedelic/indian sound that is so familiar from old records. Good stuff.

  • Not knowing which update iOS update is going to be curtains for NanoStudio2, I figured it was high time to go back and finish some tracks I’d started in NS2 earlier in the year. This one started out as my noodling around with Mariana after my initial purchase (I was late to the Mariana train, but am now a big fan). Mariana is actually the second bass sound in this track, as it starts with a Synthmaster bass (and a lot of other Synthmaster was used as well).

My original intent was to do something synthwave, but as is often the case with my genre aspirations, I tend to go off on tangents that lead me away from established genre guardrails. In this case, my two main leads were semi-improvised in one take each after noodling around with a few ideas. The result is something slightly more anthem-like (at least for the lead in the 2nd half) and off-the-cuff than would be found typical synthwave track.

  • @richardyot : Great driving intensity in the track. Those drums and bass really move everything along nicely, and the instrumental breaks really give nice moments to breathe while setting up the next sections.

@DavidEnglish : Lovely cinematic vibe. I really like the tuned percussion and strings. Haunting and gorgeous

@unlink : piano is stunning, and I love the slow build with the strings, drums and guitar. And your vocals – just wow. Amazing job. I needed a few listens just to take everything in.

@studs1966 : Great upbeat groove and vibe. Really enjoy all the different instruments supporting the groove, as well as the female vocals.

@pbelgium : Fantastic guitar-work. I really enjoyed both the lead and the supporting parts as well.

  • Better late than never! @richardyot another ear candy spectacular! I'd like to hear you do an "unplugged" song, I think you've got a lotta awesomeness under your glossy signature sound.
@benjaminprofane that Songbird is FANTASTIC! I need some of your stuff in my own stuff. Congrats!
@DavidEnglish very smooth and contemplative. Almost moody but still intriguing. Very nice.
@unlink very sedate, pieces of Broken Social Scene vibes, goes well with @DavidEnglish's.
@studs1966 great track. I'm bopping around the house right now. You still got it man!
@pbelgium Welcome to the forum! You've gifted us with a magnificent well put together GEM! Awesome!!!
@peanut_gallery I first thought this was Erasure! I agree it is anthem-like. Very cool.

Okay here's today's batch: It's my little anthem I guess...

Really cool instrumentation. Well mixed, nice complementary melodies. Perfectly suited guitar tones. Great hypnotic underlying groove/melody. I really enjoyed this. Definitely something I could listen to more of. Instrumental guitar is not easy to carry through the whole track but consider it achieved. Nice playing, note choice. Not too over the top. Just well restrained good note choices.

I didn't expect the piano, EP and sweet vocal. Based on the percussion I thought it was going to be pure dance. But it's a very nice sultry piece. Bass line is perfect for this song. Nice work.

  • @peanut_gallery cool track! I thought it was going to be Heart of Glass by Blondie (minus the Casio drum intro). I haven't used NS2 in along time, there are some great sounds, and you put them together really well. The fake ending then last outro was kicking!

    @NoiseHorse very interesting song - what's a Q-Tip?

A nice abstract sonic collage that keeps evolving until the end. It reminds me a bit of Mùm. The piano break comes at the right time to keep the listener's attention.
I am not much into those AI generated vocals, I find it sad that we came to this point where we ask the machine to sing for us instead of asking a real human being, but that's another topic... At least you took the time to manipulate those vocals samples in an inventive way instead of serving a predigested AI vocals soup, so hats off for the effort.
    Nicely put together.
