How to edit Midi automation?

Hello,

Unfortunately, as you may know, you can't visuaalize a midi cc automation recorded in Loopy Pro.

So, I'm looking for a workflow or a process to edit the midi automation within an Midi loop in LP.
The main Ideau would be to do these twothings:

  • Record live a midi loop, then edit it elsewhere to adjust the timing and values.

and/or

  • Create a midi file containing Midi Notes and CC automation somewhere, and the import it i Loopy Pro

Do you guys havean idea of a possible workflow/ external app / external software to do that?

I'm struggling because my midi loop can send various cc on different channels

Thanks!

  • You can export and import midi loops pretty easily. Xequence 2 is the most fully featured midi editor I know of. I haven’t tried that workflow, but it seems like it would be fairly smooth.

The other alternative is the route I used before midi looping came to Loopy Pro. I used Drambo as an AU to do all the midi recording and editing. That can be a good workflow. When you have things edited and playing back as you like them, you can then record that out to a loop.

About Drambo, how do I edit a midi cc automation?

About Drambo, how do I edit a midi cc automation?

First you need to record the CC automation in Drambo. To do this, add a MIDI CC Controller module to a Drambo track. Route your midi controller to Drambo. Set or midi learn the value you'll be recording. Set the pattern length (unless you'll be sending notes as well, in which case you can use "auto grow" in Drambo if you like).

Arm recording in Drambo and then start Loopy's transport and perform your automation. This should record the automation into the Drambo pattern. From there you can edit it in Drambo's automation editor.

The catch is this is Drambo automation, which isn't any use outside of Drambo. So you need a CC Generator after that to send it out. In the screen shot below I've recorded the output to a midi clip. You don't have to do that, but I did it to show the routing.

  • Fwiw, I believe lk can import midi files and has cc editing. Helix might also, but I am not certain.

    Yes

Yes, indeed Helium can import MIDI and edit CC values. There’s a panel at the bottom where you can see the CC values graphically and do curves, lines, all sorts of stuff but I must admit the interface is not ideal for those with less than great vision. Drambo has a nice clean MIDI editing interface.

Helium: good call. I forget about it because I don't own it.

I use Drambo because I like it for other sequencing and other duties, but it's a bit of a kludge for CC editing as you can tell from the description above.

You can copy Loopy midi clips to and from the clipboard. @EdZAB, do you know if copy/paste might work for midi in Helium?

LK can also edit MIDI CC automation. It worked to import midi from Loopy's midi loops to LK clips. I'm not sure it worked the other way around. Could be user error.

@wim Yep - I tried the export (up arrow in box) while editing a MIDI clip in LP and did a copy and then used the paste option in Helium and it worked.

@ttk Good catch! I forgot that if you want to paste in multiple tracks, or also include the CC automation values, you must use "Deep Paste" in Helium. I tested it by creating a track on Logic Pro with CC10 automation on it, exporting to a MIDI file, then opening it in Files, copy and then long press on Paste in Helium, to bring up Deep Paste and then selected "All Tracks" in the popup window and it imported the notes and the CC as well.

If the initial copy command captures all of the MIDI information, then I would hope it will work the same way.

  • Nice! Looks like I'm gonna need to get Helium one of these days. Thanks for checking @EdZAB.

Can you try to import a midi loop WITH cc automation , but created in Loopy Pro (instead of Logic), please?

    I don't succeed to

    Yes,

First, you need to record a live loop in LoopyPro with some notes and midi cc automation like this

Then, you open this recorded loopy (swipe up by default), press the "export" button and click on "copy"

Finally, you go to Helium, and "deep" paste it.

I just don't see the cc automation in Helium when I do it

Thanks - I used the included tutorial project "MIDI Clip Automation Example" and did the export, copy on "Clip 1" (MIDI clip with the automation on CC0 and CC1 and did a deep paste into Helium and it worked. Both CC values were available in the Controllers list in Helium and showed in the graph. I wonder if it is possible that there is something in the clip your Loopy Pro project that Helium is choking on? Maybe try the same clip from the one that I used.

Sidenote - I also tried doing a copy/paste from Loopy into the Files app and then importing that file into Helium, but the extension name is .MIDI and apparently Helium doesn't like that, so I renamed it to .MID and then that worked too.

*Edit: Update - I've duplicated the success of the copy/paste to Helium in my own custom project.
