Follow Your Heart - Ac.Guitar Piece for Collaboration

This is an original short posted in the hope of starting a chain of collaborations - similar to what happened here.

Taylor GS Mini recorded on iPhone using a Tascam iM2 mic.

Tempo 73bpm (4/4) - watch out for the pickup bar at the beginning, it starts on the 'and' of 4 (see pic). Feel free to download from Soundcloud and cut up and mangle as you see fit.

  • This would fit a Lofi beat so well, and I'm long overdue for producing one of those styled tracks. <3 Think I'll give it a shot either today or tomorrow.

  • And finished. Lofi is super easy and quick for me to produce. Not as automation-heavy as EDM, which isn't as automation-heavy as Ambient, lol. I really hope you like this one @pbelgium . :)

  • Sweet! Wasn't sure what to expect but I'm pleasantly surprised. That's a real pretty melody you've added @jwmmakerofmusic, fits perfectly. Cheers. And feel free to go in a different direction with it (might this work as Ambient?) or make your version available for others to contribute to or mash-up.

  • Nice @pbelgium ! Thanks for sharing. I might download it and have a crack at adding a few things.

@jwmmakerofmusic I really like the melody you added. Very nice!

Not really feeling the drums though, TBH.

  • @pbelgium Thanks mate. :) Maybe I'll create a different version, but meanwhile I'm thinking of cooking up some other ideas.

@Edward_Alexander Thanks mate. :) Glad you like the melody. Regarding the drums, Lofi (which is an instrumental subgenre of HipHop) does require drums. :) Drums are programmed usually pretty sparse, and the beat itself is unquantised to give it a loose and sloppy feel. A bit like a J-Dilla beat if that makes sense.

So anyways Edward, you going to do your own take with Paul's beautiful guitar playing mate? :)

  • @jwmmakerofmusic I might. Just got so many projects working right now already. @pbelgium ’s guitar part is inspiring though, so we’ll see.

And btw, yes, I know the genres 😌

I definitely agree. Paul does an amazing job with the guitar. The definition of musicality and proper musicianship in my honest opinion. It was so easy for me to build a beat around that, I finished the track in approximately an hour, mixdown and mastering included in that timeframe.

And btw, yes, I know the genres 😌

Ah, okay. :) Now I see. Well, I do like to (over)explain things and share knowledge and thoughts, but it sometimes comes off as pedantic/redundant, so I do apologise if I did, mate.

About the drums, all of the drums came from the Image-Line sample pack "The Lofi Box", which is around 20 years old as far as I can recall, long before Lofi Hip-Hop became a thing via Youtube. Very decent punchy and gritty samples that still knock out most Lofi sample packs from Splice (as the drums in the pack, while processed, aren't so over processed that it's hard to do anything with them lol). The only sample that didn't come from "The Lofi Box" was the hall kick, which came from the Deadmau5 XFer sample pack. Also a great pack where the samples aren't too overprocessed.

Better than lifeless flat Vengeance drum samples by a longshot. 🤣

All that said, I reiterate that I hope you do join in the fun, and that others will also follow suit in their genre(s) of choice.

  • Bumping the thread up so others can join. 😊

Hope you have time to have a crack - check the opening rhythm, it doesn't start on 1.

  • Thanks @pbelgium for the post and the challenge 🙏
My initial thought was to do my standard backing / lead with GeoShred routine but after a couple of failed attempts I went off-piste and produced this Dark(ish) Ambient thing.
All sounds come from / are generated by your initial track…
I reversed the track using WaveBox, ran three copies in AUM file players running at different speeds and through different effects. On two of the channels I had a copy of A2M to convert the sounds back to midi which then played two copies of PIPA for the voices and BeatHawk for some bell like sounds.

Very inventive! The result sounds great and so unexpected !

So here is the first half of a song based on the original riff. I think I have a big problem with authority, tell me right I'll go left, give me a time signature and I'll make sure not to use it .... 🤦. I have more ideas for lyrics for another round and possibly a direction for a bridge/ outro. I will try to finish it, though I'm still not sure what to think about it... certainly not as unexpected as what @GeoTony made.

Whale! Definitely unexpected. What an amazing transformation! For all intents and porpoises, it sounds like I'm under the sea listening to Bach (perhaps the Goldfish Variations). Thanks very much for sharing! (Looking forward to what you come up with for the next one here.)

Love it (everybody does)! Your vocals and melody are infectious. The triplets (12/8) against the straight 8ths was unexpected but sounds great! I think it would work if you keep the acoustic guitar bass note pulse (A D D) playing throughout your changes - don't think there are any clashes. Stick to the rules and don't finish the song (reverse psychology).

I chose to remove your acoustic guitar on the chorus for the song dynamics. it acts as an anchor when the track comes back to the verse section.

  • That works too.

    Any more takers?
