12.9 or 11 inch screen

This is kinda obvious, but opinions ate helpful. I'm gonna upgrade my old 1st gen 12.9 Pro. I'm looking at 11 inch iPads but I'm worried I might miss the extra screen real estate. I mostly use Loopy and various Au3s. Has anyone made that switch and regretted it, or thought the more compact size was helpful?

  • I have a 2nd gen 12.9 pro and a 11 inch iPad Pro M1. I love the size of the 12.9. It makes it feel like hardware.
The 11 inch works great. You’ll have. No regrets.

  • @raindro,

I have a 11” Pro. While it’s convenient to hold it in my hands I often find the screen too small for apps like Logic pro, Cubasis or some drawing apps.

If you feel comfortable with the 12.9” I suggest to stick to this size.

  • I forgot to mention that I visited an Apple store a couple of months ago and checked how logic pro runs on the 12.9” screen. The user experience was much better. The screen has plenty of space. The only thing I don’t know how convenient to hold it in my hands while laying on the couch.

I got the ESR case for that. It can have every possible angle while resting on your lap. Very convenient!

  • If you want to use the iPad on the couch, 11". If you want to use the iPad as a dedicated music creation device while sitting at a desk, 12.9". Make sure the device you buy has at least 512gb storage. :)

I thought I'd find the 13" cumbersome on the couch but it is very comfortable. I'm 5'10, so definitely not a giant 😅 I use it almost everyday like that on couches, sofas, tables. I might find it a bit cumbersome without the case though, if I had to hold it up with one hand.

  • I think the 12.9” pro m2 is pretty bulky weight wise. My arm starts to get tired holding it. The screen size is great for music and daily driver work. I have mixed feelings on the Magic Keyboard - I really like the trackpad and keys, but that cool floating effect makes it pretty awkward to use in your lap with it being so thin. I use it more often as a flat platform to put my iPad on top of for touch use if I’m not at a desk.

The big screen is a double edge sword for Apple Pencil use. I honestly preferred the original Apple Pencil on my 5th gen Mini since it meant significantly less travel time to touch any given point on the screen - especially with the home button making the screen have even less surface. It makes the iPad feel closer to a phablet or a notebook which is prime for easy cary.

You know, I’m not sure I agree on the storage aspect. I’ve had my 256 GB M2 for years now and it’s only just started getting tight on storage which was easily resolved by offloading/deleting a lot of apps I don’t use. And I’ve got a lot of storage hungry apps with large music libraries installed, along with a lot of image/video editing software with fairly large projects. I don’t think 512 GB is a bad suggestion at all - the more storage the better. But if someone is just going to use Loopy Pro and a handful of AUv3s on a dedicated music production iPad I don’t see 256 GB being an issue.

Admittedly I do pay for the 2 TB of family storage on iCloud. But I’m only using up 325 GB. Deleting XinematiX library will free up half of that easily 🙃

Now my 256 GB Mac mini has had storage issues since day one. The OS taking up half the hard drive is kinda nuts. iPadOS is very efficient in terms of footprint.

I agree with the weight. You need a stand.

I had a 3rd gen 12.91 Ipad Pro. Then got me an 11 inch. Returned it right away. Not only is the size different, the aspect ratio is different as well (4:3 vs 10:6 or something). For me 13 inch is the way to go.

Bought a Zugu-Case that made it couch ready and park ready. With IpadOS 26 you can have an almost desktop-like experience (interesting with Logic).
