Chromatose video synthesizer

subscription based, but free for experimenting. I was able to save a preset and recall this preset. I haven’t done more than changing some parameters and colours. The included library is not shabby, seems like a powerful video synth.

It is not clear what is unlocked with the Pro version. I guess it’s HDMI out, MIDI in, and some other features for professional use. But it’s only a guess. The app description doesn’t reveal details. $50/year.

Comments

  • Interesting. Certainly won’t be getting 50 bucks a year out of me though!

  • Agreed, not going to pay an annual subscription for anything. Now if they had a $5/month subscription, I'd try it out. Sadly, I'll be giving it a miss.

For note: it appears to be a full featured demo that simply locks you to saving 2 presets, according to the text (under What's New)
    ...
EDIT: confirmed in the link @philowerx just posted, the very last line reads

PS: There will always be a free un-crippled version without ads - no signup required.

    ...

I do really like this style of demo. Been spoilt by a bunch of art apps allowing the same, full use but limiting to X number of canvases

Might check it out, but I've got so many projects on burners as is right now lol

If anyone can compare/contrast with imaginando's VS, I'm curious to see whats better or worse (also, I've already got VS, so it'll help [or hinder?] my potential fomo 😁)

I used to be excited about such things. However just getting someone to record one walking down the street gives a more compelling connection to the artist in a music video than fancy graphics.

VS by Imaginado is much deeper. Chromatose as I currently understand is far more limited though on the plus side very intuitive.

    Hello,
Creator of Chromatose here. Thanks for checking out my app!

Seems like you already figured it out: the only restriction with the free version is the 2 patch save limit. Everything else is fully functional and free to try (HDMI out, MIDI control, Audio Reactivity, etc.). I will make that more clear in the App Store description.

I'll just highlight some of Chromatose's main differentiators from other video synthesizer tools:

    • Mobile-first.
    • Intuitive usability.
    • Fast learning curve (learn the entire app in under an hour).
    • Modular design (for infinite creative possibilities).
    • Personal creative focus - you start with basic building blocks to create art that is truly unique (instead pre-canned shader presets that only offer minimal control).

I hope you'll give it a closer look.

Chromatose only just launched this summer, so many more features are still coming. I'm shipping new releases with big updates every month or two. I work on this solo full-time and I've got at least 2+ years of work planned ahead of me. That's why I charge a subscription price (plus various ongoing business/infrastructure costs), otherwise a small niche product like this wouldn't be able to survive. I try to keep it affordably priced in-line with similar category apps. Full details about pricing in my blog post.

Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any other questions or feature requests. I'm usually quickly reachable on our Discord, Insta, or Subreddit.

    Cheers,
    Hekuli (Ed)

Hi there. I don't mind the subscription pricing, but I'd like to pay monthly, not annually. (It's hard for me to keep track of annual expenses versus monthly expenses.) Any possibility you can introduce monthly pricing?

Absolutely. It’s somewhat analogous to audio, when working with digital sounds, bringing in real world samples adds instant warmth and character.

I find the real with some synthesis added on, to be the most pleasing to the ear and eye.

Thanks for the feedback. I won't be making any new pricing changes for a while, b/c it's a lot of work, I just recently lowered the price, and I need to focus on features for a while. But I'll definitely take that and other users' feedback into consideration for the future.

I'll just note what's nice about how Apple helps users manage subscriptions without getting burned...

    • You can always easily view/cancel your active subscriptions directly from the App Store app.
    • You can cancel anytime and still keep access until the end of the paid subscription period.
    • Apple emails you reminders/invoices whenever you're charged.
    • If you forget to cancel and are recharged, it's just a few clicks to request a refund from Apple, which usually is granted if you catch it within a week or two (check Apple's website for exact rules/instructions in your region - for US it's here).

Also any Chromatose Patches you create remain in your library after cancellation.
