Help keeping multiple clips' "state" in sync!

Hi there loopers!

I've been making a lot of progress in transitioning to loopy pro after years of working with Ableton. But, while I've come quite far, there are still some things I'm having trouble figuring out so I'm hoping some of the experts here might be able to give me a hand :)
I'll do my best to explain my setup:

I have 3 Clips which I want to control with the same midi-bindings . Simultaneous recording is also enabled to ensure they have the exact same length and so that their current “state” (whether recording, playing, stopped, etc.) is always in sync.

I’ve set up a radio dial to control the panning of my audio signal going in as well as the corresponding routing so that it only feeds one loop at a time. This means that by moving the dial, I can seamlessly pan my recorded loops while sending them to a specific clip according to their position within the stereo field. My clips are thus named “center” “light pan” and “hard pan”. Depending on where the dial is panned, a phrase will be sent to the corresponding clip.

So far, in Ableton I would typically first record a phrase, let it playback and then begin adding layers which I position to a specific location in the stereo field on the fly. When doing this initially, all clips record simultaneously yet only one is actually receiving an audio signal.

THE PROBLEM:
In Loopy Pro, however, the state of the clips keeps getting out of sync. I believe this is because Loopy Pro treats the "recorded silence” as if the loop was empty. As a result, the clip’s record setting “If a clip has audio”- “Play if stopped, overdub if playing” affects the clips differently.

So, say I record a phrase - all 3 Clips record simultaneously, only one receives signal - and then stop playback. If I press on the "record" button again, the clip where the phrase was routed to will begin playing, however, the other two clips will immediately begin recording as they are understood to be empty. Pressing on the "record" button will then invert their state: The clip that was playing now overdubbs, the two clips that were just recording will playback.

Anybody have a tip as to how to solve this problem? Perhaps there’s just a completely different way to accomplish what I’m looking for in Loopy Pro? So far, I've been trying to translate my Ableton setup to Loopy but I'm aware that that just might not be the best strategy...

Thanks in advance for any insioghts!

David

Please make a screen recording demonstrating recording the initial cycle.

Then post screenshots of each clip’s clip so that we can see the lengths of clip.

  • Hey there @espiegel123 , thanks for the response! Was out of town over the weekend, so just got a chance to record the issue:

    https://youtu.be/0aOo0cDsz7k

I've now realized that the problem is not related to whether the clips contain audio or not. It happens when re-triggering the clips after having stopped them. You'll see this in the video starting at 0:40.

In theory, all of the clips should act the same way, that is "Play if stopped, Overdub if playing". Since the clips were stopped, they should all just begin playing again. As you will notice, however, the two lower clips immediately go into overdub mode, whilke the upper one just resumes playing. When I press the button again, they switch states. The upper clip overdubs while the lower clips play back.

Any ideas what might be going on here?

  • @BB_Blacksheep : can you post screenshots of the settings of the actions involved?

  • Hi there!

So, I seem to have found the source of the problem. I had originally grouped the clips together as I thought this would make the simultaneous Play/Stop/Rec control easier. Turns out that by ungrouping them, the setup no works as expected. Go figure....

Thanks again @espiegel123 for chiming in so quickly, muich appreciated!

Sorry for the delayed response. Did you post about this on the Facebook group by any chance? (If so, I explained there what is going and how to workaround it for the time being)

Can you post screenshots of the actions being triggered? There is an issue where simultaneous record actions record actions with "play if stopped" misbehave because the first one being triggered triggers the clock and loopy treats the other two as playing but shouldnt.

  • Hey there,

no worries, I had actually moved on after figuring out the solution with ungrouping as mentioned in my previous post. Is there another workaround I should be aware of? (The Facebook post wasn't me by the way. Not on FB very much these days...)

As to posting screenshots of the actions being triggered. There's not really much going on, to be honest. As I explained in my initial post, it's basically one Midi CC triggering three clips simultaneously with only one of them actually receiving audio at any time. When grouped, the clips behave differently despite having the same setting "Play if stopped, Overdub if playing". When ungrouped they actually work in unison... Can also send you the project if you want to have a look

It is probably the following if: if the transport is stopped and multiple clips are triggered with a record action simultaneously and the overdub option is “play if stopped, overdub if playing” then the first clip plays but the others start overdubbing rather than playing.

Does that seem like what was happening?
