IOS 26 and multiple interfaces

I would love to hear about people’s experiences in iOS 26 using different input and output devices.

A couple of questions to start off:

  • when you reboot, does the OS remember your selection for input and output devices — in the case where you selected the non-default choice?
  • Does the OS recall the choice on an app-by-app basis?

Comments

  • In my experience if the devices are changed for an app it selects them the next time the app is launched if the chosen devices are present. If the device is not connect the app defaults back to the default device.

Granted I've only tried this with two of my external devices connected at the same time (Polar GO and Scarlet 2i2 4th Gen) as well as in some cases using the iDevice speaker as the output.

But me being me I always check the connections when I do something with my devices.

  • Same experience here. I believe, for example, that AUM or Loopy just stores the IO along with the patch.

I’ve had issues with requiring one or more reboots when switching devices though. I use a soundcraft notepad on the couch and a big six in the studio. I was working on live looping material, and I had enough issues with iOS failing to recognize the new device when moving back and forth, that I just grabbed a rc505. This was last Nov, so not ios26 specific…hopefully has improved since then.

  • so you can use more than one audio interface? Hmm, I will try that out. So far I’m not so successful with a Yamaha Seqtrak. It’s a mini workstation with sequencer, and acts as a MIDI/audio interface. The attempt to record audio from the iPad microphone to the Seqtrak failed, and for playback I cannot change the output from the Seqtrak to the iPad speakers. But I will try with a real interface to see how routing works. Thanks for the tip.

Just to be clear. You can choose a different input and output device now. You can't use multiple inputs devices or output devices at the same time.

That's a great step for iOS. I will appreciate being able to have different devices for these two functions.

  • alright, thanks. Simple misunderstanding.
