What’s your method for testing new apps and plugins?

How do you test out new plugins on iOS? Do you have a good to instrument for reverbs? Is there a sample track you use to test mastering plugins? What drum kit do you open for a new sequencer pattern?

I use Pianoteq or my guitar a lot for live effects like reverb or delays. Velocity Keyboard is my default ease of use MPE controller, though when I’m trying out something more nuanced I’ll set something up in GeoShred. OneShot or DrumPerfect Pro have been my go-tos for drum sequencers with acoustic sounds and Batallion for sound design. Octachron for programmed sequences, Pop/Indian/Jazz drummers for smart drummers, and a lot of @cem_olcay apps for generative MIDI. I pull up @Rob_Jackson_Music ANALOGy series for quick synths.

I do pretty much all my routing in AUM, though I’m trying to get better with Ape Matrix or Xequence for sequencing.

For me personally, any "raw" sawtooth wave will do from any plugin. It's usually a good indicator as to the reverb's character to my ears.

Is there a sample track you use to test mastering plugins?

Not really, as I am "stuck in my ways" regarding mastering plugins. 😂 These days, it's Bark Filter followed by a limiter set to -1dB. But then again, you can subscribe to Logic Pro for iPad and get access to that Mastering Assistant. A fiver monthly as opposed to $5 per track mastered by some random online service like Soundcloud's "Instant Mastering".

What drum kit do you open for a new sequencer pattern?

An empty one, lol. I judge drum plugins based on if I can audition an audio sample before dropping it in rather than by sound design and such. So far, the only plugin I use in Cubasis 3 for drums is Koala Sampler. OneShot for acoustic drums on rare occasion, but I have a few acoustic drum sample packs (including Real Drums from Image-Line) that serve me rather well.

That's actually rather interesting. Cem's bud plugins are certainly top tier, although my favourite generative MIDI plugins are Ioniarics, followed by Harmony Bloom.

Ape Matrix hurts my brain for whatever reason, even though it looks f-ing amazing. Xequence 2 is top tier for MIDI sequencing despite it not being AUv3.

I have several AUM templates for checking out new apps, all bus'd out for the type.

For instruments, i always start with this @cem_olcay template that has Binarythmic, step(poly)bud, shiftbud, or kebarp.

For testing out fx, i usually load Mariselle and bus it out to A, B, C and then attach the new effect to one of those bus. I ALWAYS have a dedicated bus for Ring o tron and now Silo.

here's an example of my instrument template I used for testing Cem's newest app:
