  • @Wiksnet - Thank you for locating this forum and posting to share some information about your new app. I think Pro Midi is a very promising app, even with similar alternatives available. I think the metronome will be a nice addition. It would also be nice to be able to sequence patterns or groups of patterns into a "song mode".

And AudioBus is very important to allow for recording using transport controls, but I see that is already in the works. Thanks!

Thanks for joining us, those sound like some great features you have planned. Maybe clip automations as you have described would be enough to simulate a song mode?

+1 from me in this. If the automation included "play again" along with counts it could be a very robust song mode.

One more question to whoever may know, can you export a midi file from another app INTO Pro Midi using "open in"?

This is one of that had been missed. I leave on a note for the next update. It would be convenient to send midi files to other applications. Currently ProMidi just receive midi files using "Open in" feature.

Thank you. Unfortunately have to abandon the old versions. But I did so because I heard that old Apple's appstore is able to download the previous version, so I think that users can download version 1.0 even after new version.

That's a smart way to at least allow some compatibility for older devices. If I remember correctly, this option needs to be enabled by the developer per app (maybe through itunes connect?). So you might want to check that after releasing the new version.

Thanks for the video Colin. Hard to believe the dev isn't more set-up at launch time. Seems like we're often complaining of either too much marketing or not enough.... :)

App seems interesting but by no means a slam dunk. I am so new to writing with MIDI, and thus this next thought is no doubt a simple n00b delusion, but I find it strange that there isn't the single killer MIDI app which deals with all the, seemingly obvious, connection issues/design wants to the point that no one else would both writing another line of code on the subject. Like I said, n00b talk is all....

EDIT: @Wiksnet I wrote the above before realizing you had come along and answered a number of questions. Good for you (and us:). Perhaps, this app will become at least part way to the Killer app. We have seen a few developers make full use of ideas and suggestions smarter members than me have to offer and, with hard work, have seen their apps developed tremendously. A good thing for all concerned. Don't know whether you'll be keeping track, but do add another vote for Song Mode :)

    Hello @Wiksnet,

Have been using your app today and yesterday and all in all I love it.

I think this is the closest I've seen to the 'killer' slim MIDI piano roll app.

    Things I love:

    • The clip view (like Abelton)
    • The usability of the piano roll - everything works nicely and how you'd expect - all by touch
    • The Midi connectivity being driven for each track from the main clip view screen (not hidden away on other screens). It's really well done with dropdown menus for each channel
    • The fact you can limit the piano roll to a specific scale. (BUT - you can't seem to choose a key?? So I can have C minor or C blues or whatever but not E minor. I know that maybe I can do this with a custom scale but it doesn't display correctly and it's a big pain)
    • The automation - this is simply awesome! So easy and again - on the same screen as everything else. Best automation i've seen in an app by a long way (better even than Gadget) - every cc there is is there, with helpful annotation.
    • 16 channels! Unlimited number of bars!
    • Midi clock send and receive (although clock send to Gadget appears to be broken)
    • Naming of tracks and clips
    • Clips come in on the bar - this is nice
    • Remembers everything when you shut down and reboot. (Apart from having to reassign Midi to some apps)
    • Haven't tried MIDI record or MIDI open in - but these are great features

    Not perfect things:

    • No apparent way to choose a key (e.g. E# or B - it's always C)
    • The keyboard doesn't change to be in the chosen scale (I know this is in your pipeline)
(Personally those things are really big for someone who doesn't know their scales!)

    • MIDI clock sync doesn't seem to send out all that reliably (most other apps e.g. Genome will start / stop Gadget ok)

Other things that might be nice

    • Automation for clips as you describe
    • A way for rows simply to play through automatically from top to bottom (like Korg Gadget) - surely that would produce an easy song mode?
    • An XY pad / mod wheel / pitch wheel as well as the keyboard so you could 'play' cc automation
    • Audiobus transport controls, as discussed
    • IAA midi for tracks? IAA effects?

It's an amazing version 1 though! It's already my number 1 midi piano roll app (Genome just got bumped) and it's so much easier than booting up BM2 and navigating around hundreds of screens and menus etc...

Am thinking to record phrases and sequences into it from things like FiddleWax Pro, StepPolyArp and FingerTip Midi and then use it to drive 'big' synths which i'll then record and add to my 'final track destination' of either Gadget or NanoStudio.

  • People may also be interested that you can set up a separate clip for pure automation, on a different channel but pointing at the same synth. This great because you can have a 4 bar loop of notes (which is easy to tweak at will) and then have a slow 16 bar or more automation of a filter sweep or something.

I'm also thinking that you could therefore set up and audiobus chain that went, for example:

    Synth > Turnado > Audioshare

and have a Pro Midi clip (or clips) to send the notes to the synth and a different clip (or various clips) to send cc automation to Turnado (or any midi enabled audiobus FX app). Much fun could be had jamming between note clips and automation clips I imagine.

Something i'm going to try tonight is how well Pro Midi records in automation of cc's from either an external XY pad or Turnado (which i believe sends out midi ccs - but I may be wrong on that).

  • Because i'm on a roll, thought i'd answer Syrupcore and Busker's specific questions in full, in one place (as people have been so kind to do with some of my questions recently :))....

Does this have multi-note select i.e hold and drag for a selection box?
    YES

    How does copy/paste work?
    BEAUTIFULLY (just like Nanostudio basically)

Can you 'move' notes in addition to add/delete?
YEP (there's a little drag icon that comes up - really responsive and accurate)

How does scrolling and zoom work (two finger, pinch)? Is it fiddly at all (e.g. notes added accidentally when trying to scroll)?
TWO FINGER PINCH (works really nicely, none of that crazy 'whoah there, not that much' thing you get in Genome and Cubasis etc...)

Do you need to hold a control down or tap a button to perform note manipulations?
MOST THINGS CAN BE DONE DIRECT WITH TOUCH (add, delete, extend... possibly not move, where you need to grab the icon)

I have several different midi editors but they all have their quirks, still looking for the holy grail app...
    CHECK THIS OUT :).

Also, can you select multiple notes at a time and move/edit/whatever them?
YEP, even tells you how many you have selected

Is there any way to know what track 3 was pointed at the next time you open it? If it was pointed at Cassini, for example, how do you let future you know that? Track name (meh)?
    YEP, label it

    Can you send program changes?
Erm, I think the Wiksnet said yes (?)

  • @Matt_Fletcher_2000 Thanks for the detailed reply, very helpful. I think I'll be picking this up soon (after taking a look at all the current sales).

The only thing bothering me right now is the lack of song mode (even just having the rows play sequentially as you mentioned would be acceptable), but hopefully this will be addressed along with the upcoming features mentioned by the developer.

  • There's a lot to like here. I'm anxious to see clip launching via midi. Sounds like that may be coming.

  • If this only allows one global time signature without the ability to change tempo or time signature then it's useless to me no matter what else it may have. I already have way too many iOS apps with this limitation.

This is something I've been griping about ever since I first got into iOS music back in December 2012 when AB first arrived.

    Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

What busker said. The thanks @matt and the song mode concern. I might get it anyway because I loaded genome last night to fiddle with some hardware synths and was pretty much immediately put off again by the crazy menus and zooming.

Two more questions if possible! One, can you set the port and the channel per track? Two, when triggering patterns in the grid, can it be either tempo synced (wait to trigger until next bar) or immediate via setting or something?

  • @Matt_Fletcher_2000 Great stuff (and enthusiasm :).

I don't see any facility for changing the port or channel per track (column). You have a basic layout of 16 across, with no ability to add, remove or edit them, apart from renaming.

Also doesn't appear to be any sort of immediate launch mode - clips only launch on a new bar. I know Genome can go down to 1/16t for this (1/16 for reliable one shots), but nothing I could find in Pro Midi for anything but bars. Hoping this will be added along with midi assignable clip launching.

  • "One, can you set the port and the channel per track?"

YEP - you can... at the bottom of each column there's an arrow which pops up a control that lets you specify (for both MIDI IN and MIDI OUT) the MIDI channel number and the app you you want to connect with. It's per track and defaults to track 3 = midi channel 3, but you can change that. So you can have two different tracks addressing midi channel 3 (e.g. one for notes, one for automation or whatever). It's totally flexible and really well implemented (unlike say BM2) because it's all in the one place and very clear.

"Two, when triggering patterns in the grid, can it be either tempo synced (wait to trigger until next bar) or immediate via setting or something?"

NO. Not that I can see.

Well, guess I missed that one. Very nice.

  • Thanks Matt and Rad3d.

  • So. You buying it @syrupcore. ?

I need you to get it so you can help me if I get stuck with anything :).

  • haha. On the fence—lots of tempting things today. You mentioned in another thread that you can't hear anything when you touch notes in the piano roll and I imagine that driving me batty.

    Hi @Wiksnet,

Been using Pro Midi more. Still liking a lot about it.

However, there seems to be real issues clock syncing with other apps when Pro Midi is sending it's clock out.

Or rather Pro Midi DOES send out it's tempo (for example it sends tempo to Egoist correctly) but it doesn't seem to send a 'start' message to actually start Egoist playing. Same problem with Gadget.

To use it as 'Midi Headquarters' it really needs to be able to start and stop other devices. Would be great if this could be looked at for the next update before some of the other more advanced features.

  • On sale at $3,99 from $9,99.

  • edited December 2014

I think it's a total no brainer at that price.

It's really good in my opinion. And I'm sure it will get better.

It's kind of a pro version of Auxi without any onboard sounds.

  • Got it at sale price looks like it has great potential, however having major problems on ipad 3 latest iOS yes I know not the apps fault.

I tried 2 synths with it the keyboard within the app not playing with Sunrizer. All the usually connections made midi channel check correct. Back round mode on both apps check. MIDI clock sync off check. Got it working fully with NLog Pro for a bit now the apps keyboard is working however playing back clips after data in no sound is produced. Again all the usually items checked including Greens at the bottom and mute off.

I've reinstalled Pro Midi 4 times now and done a hard reset but keep getting these problems. Anyone else having this intermittent midi problem with no sound ? @Wiksnet its a great app but at present frustrating me as I can't see why I'm getting this problem.

  • Good thing I got it last week at the introductory price of 10. before it went down!

  • I'm liking it so far. I have a couple of jams scheduled this month, but my drummer can't make either, so I'm thinking this might do pretty well with some drum loops.

  • edited December 2014

Are there some good videos of it in use and how long is it on sale for?

  • Not sure how long the sale will last.

you say you're running iOS 8 and you are NOT using audio bus and you're having these problems?
