It doesn’t make sense to be constantly switch workspaces. You’ll never become competent and learn the program if you’re jumping around all the time. I know AUM. I can work on it efficiently. It suits my style of production. I’m not going to jump ship every time a shiny new app comes out.

It’s not like any of these apps are rocket science. It’s completely possible to be competent and even comfortable in more than one host.

It is tough and depends on where you’re at with your making journey. Sometimes it might feel like rocket science and if you’re inexperienced it’s hard to tell if that’s because you’re clueless, the functionality isn’t there, the app is buggy, or the UI is cryptic.

I’d say someone new should maybe grab 2 or 3 hosts to see what gels depending on what you can afford. One of the more structured traditional hosts like Cubasis or Logic and a couple of the more affordable “vibe” hosts like Drambo, Loopy, AUM, etc. GarageBand sits kind of in a middle ground and really is a good launching point.

I think that's more a function of tolerance for learning / discovering than capability. We all learned to do routine tasks every day that are more complex than routing some plugins. Cook a meal, drive a car, manage finances, play an instrument, shop for groceries, ride a bike ...

But what I was really referring to (though I could have put it less sarcastically) is once you've learned a host at some level, switching between different hosts isn't going to diminish your ability to make music. In fact, it can inspire different ideas. I mean, how deeply ingrained does a particular host have to be? To me, not very deep. ymmv.

I get what you're saying though about the discovery process not always being smooth. I just don't think it's so difficult that anyone should fear trying other environments - unless they just don't want to. As the good book says, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it."

  • One thing I’ll say on the “using Loopy Pro as one uses AUM” subject: LP makes (in my opinion) very good use of the screen real estate on a phone in the mixer view. For me AUM is challenging on a phone screen. I’m not a big user of music apps on my phone, but I’m starting to think that would be a good way to grab little snippets of music making time.

I tried Loopy and thought, “wow, this like AUM with a timeline/multi-tracker”. Then, I tried using it for recording and loading clips and the honeymoon was over. I simply can’t get anything done in it. Recently, I revisited LP and tried to load a simple clip and couldn’t figure it out. If I have to read the manual to do simple things, I’m going to lose interest. AUM is very intuitive and that what’s I want when I sit down with my guitar after a long workday when I have little patience for fiddling around instead of playing.

Any chance you could share details with us of what you couldn't figure out? We'd love to address whatever it was that didn't work out for you.

Sorry I didn’t get back to you before but I do have a new example. I decided I wanted a simple guitar looper in AUM. I opened the standalone loopy app and chose the “simple 4- track” template. It took a bit to figure out, but I finally moved it into the right folder so it could be opened in the plug-in. I then opened loopy as the last item in my channel before the output. Silence. I didn’t spent about a half hour trying to figure out if it was a monitoring situation in loopy or what else it might be even consulting ChatGPT, which was no help. This is always been the case with Loopy. I try to do the simplest things and it just doesn’t work without an extremely an unintuitive workaround that I just don’t have time for. No other apps that I use have been anywhere near this on unintuitive. Have given up many times, but I keep coming back thinking maybe I can use it this way and it won’t be a pain. I just give up and don’t open it again until months later. I just don’t have time to wrestle with it to get it to do the most basic functions.

Don’t hesitate to ask here if anything takes more than a few minutes to figure out. If you ask here, we can probably answer right away.

Was it difficult to find the section about monitoring in the manual?

Don’t waste your time with LLMs for this. They often give totally wrong answers.

This sounds like you probably didn’t have monitoring turned in the AU’s mixer.

Can you tell me what some of those extremely simple things are that can’t be done without a workaround? We’d love to be able to address those. So, if you could provide examples that would be great.

  • Why do I still use AUM?
I recently bit the bullet and purchased Loopy Pro because I want to get into live looping. I am going blind watching you tube tutorials and trying them out. I am making steady progress.

I have used AUM for many years and have several sessions that are more than enough for live performance. Wim helped me greatly with a Mozaic script that uses ONE footswitch coupled with the keys on my midi accordion. I have it set so any key in the lowest octave can select a session. Any key in the next octave can select presets in the apps in the current sessions. I always have at LEAST three midi channels simultaneously activated because of how accordions work (bass section, chord section and treble keyboard).

I am going to try to run the three midi channels to three loops at the same time. In some cases I can set up the bass, chord and melody loops immediately instead of building them one at a time.

I was hoping to port AUM into Loopy Pro and preserve this control. I see from this thread that AUM and LP are more often an either/or situation. I am still trying to combine them but need to learn some more about LP.
What is your opinion? Is it more likely to reach my goal running AUM in LP or better to run LP in AUM?
Any help or opinions are greatly appreciated.

I might be wrong about this, but I'm pretty sure you can't run AUM inside Loopy Pro!

I didn't watch the whole thing, but this is Loopy Pro inside AUM. That's possible, sure, because Loopy Pro is a host but it also has an AUv3 version. But it doesn't mean you can host AUM inside Loopy Pro. AUM is just a host, it's not a plugin. Even if you could load it inside Loopy Pro, it would be useless, as an AUv3 host cannot load AUv3s inside another AUv3 host.

I believe you because you are much more versed in LP than I and also because I have been trying to make it work with no success. Thanks for answering my question.
This leads to my new question. Should I run LP in AUM in the effects slot, the input slot or not bother trying to run them together?
I have much to learn about LP. Thanks for answering my question.

I know a lot about AUM, I’ve barely used Loopy tbh, as great as it surely is. Loopy can be used in a variety of slots, depending on your use case, but @espiegel123 will help you with Loopy stuff, he’s the man to ask, for sure.

If you are having trouble getting started in Loopy Pro, can you start a topic in the Loopy Pro category? I'd be happy to help you get up and running.

I will certainly do so. I have been using this forum since Audiobus for everything. I never knew there was a Loopy Pro category. Makes a lot of sense.😊
