Best app for straight-up flicking through short audio samples? (Over LAN)
dear all,
As title suggests,
I have a big pack of about 8gb of WAV files. (These are CC sound samples which were made available at the Game Developers Conference 2024).
For reasons, I don’t want to wang them alll over to the iPad, so I’m looking for a no-frills, (no lag!) 🙏🏻 app which can flick through and quickly listen to them, so i can make notes as i go.
The Files app has an audio preview which is not bad, but something with a decent tree or something slightly organised-looking would be great
I tried SampleCrate back a couple years ago, but I just need something even simpler tbh
—final question, are there any apps which can straight-up play over the LAN (stream), or does everything still need to ‘live’ in it’s own app on the iPad. (Like in 1998). 😕
Many thanks guys
Hope all are well, and surviving these more savage weather!

Samplecrate?
Was just about to type that...
...mount the network share with the samples and browse away
Media Assistant
See a buncha IAPs mentioning auv3 stuff. How exactly do those functions work (if you have/use them, of course!)
I'm not sure about all the IAP's, you only purchase what you need. I have bought them all (to support the dev), but I only use the audio player and editor tools, which are very useful.
Having a quick look, the AUv3 browser searches online audio sources like radio stations etc. The tagger searches for files on your device or cloud using ... tags. Maybe you can add tags as well.
Neat thanks! Will download and have a look around 👍
Samplecrate is the best, to my knowledge.
Sitala had a really dope sample browser, not sure how he did that and haven’t seen anything similar since. I think Sample Crate is the most intuitive and accessible sample browser, but would love to find one that’s even better, because it’s pretty darn good.
Well that’s a helpful app! Question: when you’re tagging and creating crates and stuff, does it “double” the sound files? Like, create additional copies of the files of the sounds in samplecrate destinations? I know drum sounds are usually minuscule in size, but I’m always trying to keep my hard drive that’s on the smaller side in mind.
Foobar2000 I tried..
Seemed simple and lightweight as inventive 👍🏻
however I couldn’t get it to connect to my windows SMB share, same occurs within VLC when I try n connect to the share. (iPad).
(Off-topic: yet bizarrely VLC on my iPhone has no trouble) 🤷♂️
I went with SampleCrate in the end 👍🏻, working nicely 🙏🏻
Thanks
It's been a long, long time since I connected to a Windows share, but I think there was something to do with authentication encryption level buried in security options somewhere.
One thing: with SampleCrate, you are actually downloading every sample you preview. It's not streaming across the LAN. If you place your files in iCloud, iOS will occasionally offload the local copies when space becomes an issue, or for whatever logic Apple uses for such things.
