EG Pulse..... Not Cuttin' It (o Bangin' it)

edited November 2025 in General App Discussion

Hi,
Looking for a better mouse trap, ur uh..... drum machine. I have EG pulse.
When playing a single /specific pad, the sound isn't that bad or even fairly good - but when I create a beat in the grid; the sound is uh.... like sterile, or dead, or lackluster... and it sounds like fake drum machine like, rather than like real drums. No matter how hard I try, I can't get a snare where you hear the springs to work in pattern playing - they end up sounding like high pitched toms, or snares with no springs.

Also - in the EG Pulse Grid - you can not set the volume or velocity of each hit; if you place a hit on a certain spot on the grid, you get the full volume of the pad and that's it.
Also - in the EG Pulse Grid - you can not set any delays of a hit.

I need something more real. Something where the kit rings out in play mode. A plus would be that you could adjust the volume of each hit.

FYI - I have the AUV3 of the 808s and 909s, and that's not what I want.

UPDATE: I did load some kick /snare samples in Koala, and then create a MIDI clip in LP to trigger them. Works OK, and also I found one of my longer Mig Andrews samples that works pretty well.

Thanks
AJ

  • @Vmusic - FYI - On the Automation page in EG Pulse you can set velocity, pan, pitch and probability per step and per kit piece.

  • Klevgrand OneShot sounds absolutely lovely and human as a multi-sample player and has great built-in kits, but does not include a sequencer of any kind. Pairs well with Octachron (or any other drum sequencer you like really).

The quickest way to great human sounding drums is (for me) the Lumbeats apps. They are mostly IAA, a dealbreaker for others, but for me they sound great and also give great midi for Klevgrand's One Shot and Slammer.

also jAmp Percussive sounds very groovy and is pretty cheap.
