Plugin Hosts Feature Set

I’m trying to make a table/chart covering features included in various DAWs and plugin hosts. Things like having a timeline, audio tracks, multi-in/out plugin support, etc. Does anything like this exist? I’d like some help coming up with categories and need info on hosts I don’t have.

It’s not filled in by any means and I’m not married to the formatting or feature list. I plan to chip away at it over time but I’ve made it collaborative so others can contribute. Please only fill in blanks and don’t add/remove any categories. If it gets too messy as a colab I might turn it into view only with selected editors but we’ll see I suppose.

I’m not sure if this colab link works as a zip. If I need to I think I can generate an iCloud link or just make it a Numbers file. Again, open to suggestions.

Comments

  • The zip file just downloads locally. I don't think there is any smarts there for collaboration. Any edits would just be to the local downloaded copy.

I think I'd put it up as a google sheet. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets. There are no hassles with Excel vs. Sheets, etc. that way.

  • Looks good. It loaded read-only right away from the link. I sent you an edit request as a test.

I added you as an editor. It should be open to anyone to edit now as well. Hopefully that doesn’t end up as chaos.

  • It worked. I did a quick update for Loopy Pro (from memory mostly).

  • Does anyone have up to date info on DAWs with multi-core support? I’ve found Logic Pro, Cubasis 3, FL Studio, n-Track Studio, and Audio Evolution

  • The user and all related content has been deleted.

    Multi Threading you mean?

    BAM does

I’ve seen both multi-core and multi-threading both mentioned. Is there any difference?

Technically multi-threaded audio support is more correct than multi-core Audio support, but the terms are often used interchangeably and effectively come down to the same thing.

Threads can only run on one core at a time. Before audio multi-threading was introduced, there could only be one audio thread, thus only one core used at a time for audio processing. Other threads have always been able to be used for non-audio tasks at the same time though.

If an app is multi-thread audio enabled, those threads can each run on separate cores as the operating system decides. So it comes down to basically the same thing, though I think multi-thread is the better term.

  • I think GarageBand is multi-thread audio enabled.

  • @jwmmakerofmusic I know you’re a big FL Studio user - maybe you could help fill in some of those blanks if you get the chance.

  • Jonathan’s post about multi-threaded audio is worth reading.

    We'll see mate. :)

  • Does anyone have info on multi-out instrument and multi-out fx support in Zenbeats or BAM?

Zenbeats has multi-out instrument support. I don't think so for FX, but I'm not sure.
    I bet @DMfan knows.

  • Time Signatures & internal multi-midi routing are two factors which affect my search & use of a host .

Torn between Zenbeats which is good for 7/8 , 15/16 but a no-go for multi -midi routing
(e.g trying to route 4 midi channels of Euclidean sequencer to 4 separate tracks) …..

& AUM which only offers /4 TimeSigs but has excellent midirouting .

I'm kind of curious why time signatures are important in AUM? Is it just for the metronome, or for other reasons?

  • @Wim
It’s for bar syncing , both for other apps & for syncing with desktop Ableton either in realtime or swapping midi files across.
I’ve been told here before that there is no difference between 5/4, 5/8 or 5/16 but there is ..
it affects the bar count .

  • Thanks for starting this - I have data on a few hosts and sequencers I put together a while back that I will try to add.
