(Poppin) and P-Locking in AUM
I’ve grown to love Drambos p-lock system while making my way through learning the app. Just hit record, wiggle some auv3’s knobs, and the “automation” gets recorded!
Is there a way to do this in AUM with additional apps? I’ll be in the middle of a session and wish I had started it in drambo. Sure I could load up and connect some lfos, but p-locking is just so immediate. Could have sworn there was a 4pockets app that does this but I can’t find it. Thanks!

I don't have an answer for you, but I felt compelled to be here for some reason
Haha, get on in here! The waters fiiiine…
Watched some more demos, I thinnnnk NuRack can do it with the midi modules, but still not 100% sure… can anyone confirm?
Could you not use Drambo loaded in AUM?
AFAIK you can’t load auv3s into drambo when you host it in AUM
That’s true yes. I meant if you’re looking for an app to load into Aum to give you P-locks, why not just use Drambo?
Because I’m not as familiar with Drambo as I am with AUM; it’s my favorite host.
I can see how that is a dumb take. Guess I’m just trying to create a host that has all my favorite features rolled into one package. I want to have my cake and eat it too, darn it!
Sorry, I think maybe we got our wires crossed. I thought you were looking for a midi sequencer to load into AUM that would give you p-locks
No harm no foul! 🤙 basically just trying to add the “record auv3 knob change movements” that are available in drambo, cubasis, etc into AUM
I do so badly wish aum had that feature, I just use an app like sqsl strips for something similar but it's obviously slightly more setup needed
Same, but instead of strips I use cc-pal (feel like we’ve had this convo before haha). Both are IAA so a bit of a bother, also can’t do it with the knobs themselves. You have to do it through the IAA interface. Works! But not ideal.

I found this update vid for NuRack that I think would make it doable within AUM itself, but can’t say for sure:
Seems that app has added a load of new modules over time that I wasn’t aware of. Originally struck me as just a “create your own fx auv3” type deal but apparently it is capable of much more. If I didn’t have this Black Friday budget I’d buy and try immediately haha
As you've already realized, that's only possible for AUv3 parameters if the host implements something like that. There's no way for plugins to automate AUv3 parameters of other apps directly.
However, you could use Drambo outputting MIDI CCs to AUM's parameter control system to indirectly control other apps. Set up as exclusively or primarily as a midi sequencer, you can still use p-locks. Sadly though, that's a lot of setup, and you also may get steppy-ness from midi's low resolution.
Appreciate the info/chiming in. Great points! I considered that drambo route but like you said, too much setup for it to be worth. I threw NuRack on “the list” and will pick it up next time 4pockets includes it in their weekly sales.
What these apps like cc-pal and strips are doing is basically just recording a loop of midi data and sending it somewhere, in my case ‘AUM destination’, and I can point that data at whatever. Works, so the only thing I’d need to make it better would be to skip the IAA part and do it in host. What I’m understanding NuRack does is it syncs to the hosts transport and creates a buffer, like Drambos midi buffer, and records the midi data aimed at it, in my case the movement of an auv3s knob. At least that’s what I gleaned from the one vid I could find addressing it; that short update vid by Paul that only briefly goes over it. But after watching NuRack stuff all morning I’m kinda interested in the app in terms of building my own effects (Ive always wanted a decent iOS univibe effect anyway and saw there’s options to ‘build’ that in there). So worst case scenario, NuRack doesn’t solve my p-lock problem but now I’ll own a Franken-auv3 builder! haha
Isn’t apematrix only the provided lfos tho? You mention “other modulation” so maybe there’s features in there I’m not aware? That lfo system does look user friendly, but I have lfos that I can route to stuff in AUM as well. I’m after that sweet sweet p-lock modulation tho haha. It’s one thing to play around with an lfos shape, depth, speed, etc to get the result I’m looking for, but I also want to be able to just jiggle a knob real quick and have it jiggle back.
@Squishy - just for clarification, you're really looking for simple midi automation recording, not specifically p-locks? P-locks are significantly different in that they're tied to steps in a step sequencer.
There are more options if all you need is midi CC recording and playback. Anything that can record midi CCs is going to work. Atom 2, Midi Tape Recorder, Loopy Pro, Drambo ...
You still have to do all the wiring up though, and you won't be able to record from movement of knobs in the plugin itself, except in the rare cases where those knobs output midi. You'll be needing to record external midi input or from a controller app, and all that will need to be routed to the AU parameters.
If you want actual p-locks you could set up a bunch of knobs in Drambo that send CC. Have them control the parameters of the AUs you want, and then you can use the Drambo sequencer for the locking. It’s not that much work to set up.
Ya, that was the part of the update video I linked that didn’t make sense to me; how was his NuRack app recording knob movements, those don’t “put out” midi messages, they only accept them. I probably misunderstood what he was doing. With the IAA CC-PAL, if I connect it to to the same midi channel/note as an auv3 parameter, then go to CC-PAL and wiggle, the knob in the auv3 wiggles, so when I hit record in cc-pal it’s recording the movement then sending it to AUM not the other way around. Will any of the recorders you mentioned serve that same function?
This makes sense and could work I suppose, and then just save it as a template to load up in the future. Why did I try and “replicate drambo” when I could just drambo haha
@offbrands
I’m still learning drambo and honestly don’t know exactly how the whole p-lock system works. It probably does all kinds of other stuff, I just like being able to hit record and twist knobs for how many ever bars, then when it replays those bars all those knob movements replay to. That’s it! (Cubasis can do it too. Nanostudio 2 as well I believe?)
P-locking in Drambo is insanely deep too. You can p-lock clips as well as steps, and use the crossfader to fade between two scenes with different locks. And that’s just the beginning. I would definitely try to get going with Drambo.
It sounds like you’re using parameter automation recording more than p-locks though. Which is great too, and can be combined with p-locks. In case you don’t know - a p-lock is when you hold down on a step and move a parameter. Then it will activate when the sequencer hits that step.
Ok yup, so I just shouldn’t have used the term p-lock to begin with then. Can you tell I’m drambo noob? Haha! So parameter automation is what I’m looking for then. (But that parameter per step/long hold IS new to me and sounds fannntastic. Also understand now the purpose of the crossfader, thanks!👍)
Synths etc that you can run inside AUM give cc controls to AUM which other apps like many sequencers can cc control per step.
MIDI dreams is ONE such app (auv3)
Gatelab is another I’m sure there’s more
Also 4pockets midisteps
I think it’ll help if you understand what’s really happening. CC-PAL, Drambo, NuRack, Loopy, whatever are simply sending out midi cc values. If you connect those CC’s to plugin parameters through AUM midi control, then those values can move the knobs in the plugin. None of those apps is doing anything but sending midi cc values. They don’t know anything about the app they’re sending to.
So, it doesn’t matter at all what’s doing the sending. All apps are doing the same thing.
It’s important to note that this is one-way communication. If you move a knob in the plugin you’re controlling, it wont update the sender and the two will be out of sync.
I would stick with Drambo for the midi recording and playback in AUM. You’re used to it. All you need to do is learn how to set up the midi out generators that you need. That part is easy.
Or, I’d drop AUM and become more comfortable with Drambo as a host. It’s better in a lot of ways, though obviously not as intuitive for one accustomed to AUM.
Either way, there’s not a super lot of adaptation needed, just a bit of understanding of a few new ideas.
You could also give Loopy Pro a go. It can be used in a similar fashion to AUM, as primarily a mixer, but you can also do automation recording. It is a bit of setup again for that, and you can’t edit automation yet (Drambo is amazing for that), but once you have a custom template going it’s golden.
