Zoom U44 digital out/ADAT
Hey guys, I know many of you still using the Zoom so I think I ask here:
Have recently bought the U44 mainly for digital recording the iPad into the Mpc.
I have connected the MPC with an Audient ID14II which has an adat input, but I can't get any signal from the Zoom into the Audient.
Both interfaces work fine and cables where connected right... But nothing....
Set the Samplerate on IOS and MPC to the same: 44,1/24bit, tried also other combinations but still no sound.... The Audient was set to S/PDIF and external clock...
I use a cheap no brand Toslink cable which had worked flawlessly in my Homecinema Amplifier... so this should not be the problem...
AFAIK there are no settings on the Zoom for digital output, basically the Stereo out is mirrored by them, right?
Drives me crazy!

I haven't used either of these pieces of equipment, so take what I saw with a grain of salt. Skipping the spec sheet and features of the Zoom U-44, it appears to have S/PDIF I/O, not ADAT. It's easy to confuse ADAT and S/PDIF because they use the same physical jacks and cables, but they use entirely different protocols for data transfer. They are not interchangeable (unless the device was deliberately built to support both protocols). I haven't read the full user manual, so I suggest you consult that document to double-check my claims. It's possible that the U-44 supports both protocols even though the online datasheet doesn't describe that feature.
The online info about the Audient iD14 II is mixed. On the product homepage, it says it supports "both ADAT and SPDIF" -- but the spec sheet only mentions ADAT support.
Maybe S/PDIF was added in a recent update and they haven't updated all the promo material:documentation to reflect it? Or maybe it's a mistake, since I only saw it mentioned in one place.
In any case, S/PDIF and ADAT send data in different ways. ADAT can be used for 8 channel audio, but S/PDIF usually only supports 2-channel audio.
Audient interfaces usually have support for both SPDIF or ADAT with their optical input.
My Sono definitely does.
Thanks for your answers! Yeah, the Audient supports SPDIF and ADAT, and as I said I have set the settings set to SPDIF.
Forgot to mention that the connection worked on my Computer, but not on the MPC strangely.
Theoretical it should work cause other people connected a ADAT Interface (Behringer 8000 fe.) successfully to the ID14 on the MPC....
I am thinking of buying the cheap Behringer UCA202 for recording my iPad...
Maybe that’s because the Audient needs a driver and the Behringer doesn’t.
Coincidentally, Audient discontinued the Sono (my interface) yesterday! There will be no new drivers after Tahoe, which will be the last supported OS.
Yay.
Yeah, I also think it's on the Audient side cause there is no memory built in into the device. Hell, the forgotten volume settings each time I use the interface drives me crazy as well.
Oh, didn't know the Sono interface but it seems not too old... No driver anymore, wow... Compare that to RME f.e.
Hi,
I am also disappointed that this interface doesn’t support digital in/out on iOS devices. This is also mentioned in the manual. 😢
You mean the Zoom? This is stated on the manual?
