Do you have to buy voices or are there any available in the free version?

I forget the starting set up... Check the App Store details or one of the YouTube tutorials. Maybe I could install on my wife's iPad to be a newbie again...

I went ahead and downloaded it, you get some voices with the initial install...

Couldn't get it to run well in either AUM or LP4i on my M2 without lots of artifacts so I removed it again...to bad, some of the sounds in Jacob's video were really interesting...

Yeah... It pushes the limits of realtime "vocal synthesys" on IOS and probably on Mac OS given our new chip performance that is deployed for both systems now. mac OS has more effort at multi-tasking while IOS tries to avoid needing fans or massive heat sinks so it's dialed back to avoid smoke.

I like it's erzatz quality of MicDrop and it's ridiculous weirdness. I dial up the weirdness and tune in for humor as the intended effect. It it fools someone they haven't listened a lot of music since the advent of the drum machine.

But we all hear 'good' music differently and might not have the same playlist of favorites.

So is this usable with an M2 iPad Pro 12.9” using a multi core daw? Seems like that’s the exact one Jakob is using but I only “watched” the video by it playing in the background. Is it able to process audio, just not live vocals?

I’m interested regardless. I tried it out when it first dropped but the crashing in AUM killed it for me. I don’t think I was aware you needed a multi-core DAW.

AUM is too easy to choke these days with a few heavy plug-ins...
...so yeah, a DAW like Cubasis is more than likely needed to enjoy it :)

I do agree that AUM is easily bogged down. I mentioned in the Logic Pro thread, but I’d love AUM to get multi core additions or Logic to get multi-out fx plugins. One can dream.

  • Tested out the demo in Logic Pro and it handled a recorded voice sample well. I didn’t test it live. I wonder if the full purchase would be justified vs getting the base voices and any extras you want for $0.99 more.

No… I’m solid IOS because I prefer the touch interface due to carpal tunnel issues from years of desktop and laptop use.

  • I had no luck getting MicDrop to work when it originally launched. Since this thread put it back on my radar I've reinstalled it and it's working fine on my M1 iPad Pro now. Planning to freeze effected tracks anyway so not too bothered about performance but it's perfectly stable auditioning voices so far.

  • It’s running really smoothly in LP4i. Does anyone else get a lot of high pitch background artifacts? I didn’t do much setup on vocals going in. The chain was just dry vocals going in, then I put Brusfri -> Mic Drop -> Purrist and messed around with that for pretty good results but wonder if anyone has suggestions on further cleanup.

I've only put fairly 'mic clean' vocals through it so far, with very few artefacts even with no cleanup (and then mostly sample window transit hitches which are probably unavoidable). With adjustment of the gate controls MD should clean up vocal recordings itself - as Jakob noted in his video, and as claimed in the devs' launch video.

  • Hey, this is Josh from SoundLabs. I just wanted to chime in to thank everyone in this thread and to kind of give a status update related to performance. It wasn't simple to get this working on mobile and in the DAW in general, so the initial launch was admittedly rough in terms of how much it was pushing the system.

We have found and solved one of the last remaining issues causing performance to be less than it should be. That fix will be pushed in an update this week. It runs much smoother than it did previously and I have personally used 3 instances at the same time on an M1 iPad. We think you'll all really appreciate the way the new version feels.

Cheers all around and I'll post again when the new build goes live. I love this clip from Haq's video with the synth->flute example!

  • @amusesmile This is great news! I have an M1 and I've been really looking forward to this, as your app has been a bit of a shambles for me up until now. I hope this update will be a welcome one for everyone! Thanks in advance!

    Great to hear!
Could I be able to run a live instance of Micdrop on a Pro M4 with this update?

Thank you for all the ongoing development - really enjoying this app both as a toy and as a serious production tool.

Hey Josh, you're one of Unfiltered Audio as well aren't you? Cool, I didn't know the connection

The one and only. =] Yes, after working with BT on Tails we all remained friends. We started SoundLabs as a dedicated place in which to work on these collaborations. SoundLabs is more AI-focussed but I guess in a way that's a kind of counterpoint to the prevailing trends in the industry. I won't speak for the others, but on my side I want to make stuff that feels like the future without feeling like a BAD future. Push the boundaries of what's possible and have fun with it, etc. The cello model here in MicDrop is still something that was one of those future-shock moments for me. I talk about it constantly with friends. When BT sent me the demo I couldn't believe it. To my ears it's better than any physical model or sample library. It's those kind of moments I hope people get off of this and the other stuff we've been working on. I was so happy for the Haq video, as I can tell he really got what we were going for- understood the spirit of the thing.

New version is available and works much better (cpu) now in AUM
[Edit] well in fact it’s strange as it introduce a kind of 1 seconde latency even when the plugin is not active…impossible to play live (I have a M5)

Can confirm strange latency with other apps.
If iam processing a file of say dialogue with micdrop and send original unprocessed by a mix bus and compare the unprocessed and processed audio then it sounds fine no latency detected.
However what is noticble is that with say Popdrummer and Ruismaker noir they go out of time when mic drop is loaded . The latency then disappears when I remove the app but returns when I reload. Micdrop This happens in Aum .
( Edited for clarity - loading micdrop on a separate audio channel can instigate these timing issues . Will try it with Cubasis when I get off my nightshift tomorrow morning)

Other than this strange quirk I gotta say that I really do like this app . Well that’s an understatement as my mind is completely blown . Definitely getting Shpongle vibes .

A question regarding pricing though the base perpetual is £24.99 for 16 voices ,however individual voices are £0.99 each or am I missing something ?

  • Well I tried with AUM again and this time no latency whatsoever. Had three drum apps playing in time and micdrop was processing audio . My battery was very low previously so maybe that was causing the timing gremlins.

  • I tested the initial release of this. Thought I'd have a look and see if it now actually works but found that the demo is expired from trying the first release. Something for the developers to bear in mind, as after the initial experience I don't fancy paying to test it out again.
