Update issue
When I updated to loopy pro 2.0 it seems that on all three of my iPhones the “duplicate” in projects is now greyed out?
Comments
I’ve not heard of that happening before. What OS are you running? Are you able to create new projects and record?
@schmeckman, if you create a new project, but have not saved it yet, Duplicate will be grayed out. If you save the project, close the project menu, then re-open it, you should then see the duplicate button.
Thankyou for responding espeagel 123 and wim….. that did the trick… needed to save project …. I don’t remember it ever being grayed out like that before I got the 2.0 version, but I haven’t used loopy for a while… am just now working on learning the new version, seems even more amazing than before… I don’t really understand midi very well especially the loops but am watching some YouTube’s….any recommendations for getting some midi loops files that I could bring into the new midi loops in loopy and play using sds-x and. DigiStix 2. I’m not a drummer and would be nice to have some good hi hat patterns especially, to add in to projects. Also I have an Alesia sr 18 , is there anyway to get those patterns into loopy pro and play them through DigiStix 2 or sds-x using them as midi patterns in midi loops…. I tried it the other night and sds-x would only play I couple drum beats…. It did work a little I think but they seem to be speaking a different language…. Would be nice if there was a way to bring all the patterns from Alesis as midi into files app and then be able to bring those files into loopy midi loops and then play them through the drum auv’s but if that’s not possible would still be good to do the other( hook up drum machine and play the patterns through the auv’s)… thanks again
Hi. Regarding drum "language", different apps use different MIDI notes to generate their sounds. Very few use the "standard" General MIDI drum map. The Octachron sequencer app notably includes maps for different drum apps. Also, some apps use C3 for middle C, some use C4, so you need to beware possible octave shifts in note names.
Thankyou uncle Dave … I purchased the app… haven’t opened yet but it looks like the sequencer in GarageBand iOS which is good, but will be nice to have it straight into loopy or AUM…midi stuff is still baffling to me… and would still like to be able to use patterns from alesis sr 18 played through an auv like DigiStix through midi though… would love to just get midi of all those patterns into files or AudioShare or something and then be able to open them in loopy pro midi loop and be able to play them through something else… wonder if i could bring them into octachron and it would be able to interpret them…. Anyway Thankyou for responding
Unfortunately this is far from a simple topic.
First, as already mentioned, the SR 18 probably outputs a certain set of notes known as the General MIDI (GM) drum map. You can find the layout of this note scheme easily enough on the internet, but there are at several complications:
You end up needing something that can translate the output from the SR 18 to the notes needed by whatever apps you’re using if the notes that the app uses can’t be customized. I believe you can do this kind of customization in DigiStix 2, but you have to set it up, and the output from the SR 8 may not be consistent. You might have patterns with no toms, or you might have patterns that vary in which toms they use, or that may use percussion.
mfxConvert is a handy MIDI mapping utility that you can put between the input and apps which don’t offer that kind of customization. It takes work to set up, but at least you can save presets.
The other way is to edit the patterns themselves, shifting notes up or down as needed.
Lastly, I doubt theres a way to pull a midi file out of the SR 8 such that you could import it into Loopy or anything else. You’ll need to record the SR 8 patterns to midi clips one-by-one to use them. I haven’t looked at the manual, but I’m pretty sure that’ll be the case.
Sorry, I’m sure it seems like it should be way easier than all that. Unfortunately there are no real simple answers.
Thankyou for taking the time to explain all that…the octachron app is excellent will have to spend a little more time with it but will be awesome with sds-x and DigiStix…. I figure I could mute individual drums in the sr18 and record them into loopy pro or GarageBand on individual tracks and then put fx individually on each drum to get great sounds but that would be incredibly time consuming I’m sure…I like a lot of the patterns in it but they are so bland… anyway thanks again for the explanation
@wim . Your post should be a FAQ, so we could refer to it every time these questions come up. It looks like you covered all the bases. A while ago, I made a StreamByter scheme that could map any source app to any target app. It just needed a file mapping the app-specific notes to GM. Load two of those files and there's your map. But I abandoned it after realizing that:
I suppose you could define mappings for a more limited kit, like a 50's era jazz/rock kit. But it wouldn't be much use, would it?
You know that is very insightful…. I’m retired now and although I don’t understand technology at all, I have learned quite a bit about life and acceptance I think……. the older you get the more you realize that your time on this planet is becoming more valuable and your limitations growing larger…. I do not have the time or capability anymore to invest in learning many completely new things… I play guitar and sing(such as I do) and I have to accept at this point I cannot become a great piano or violin player…. I can either continue to fight with that reality, or I can invest time in becoming a little better guitar player and singer ,which I have invested much time in to lesser avail than I would like, mostly because of having constantly attempted to find short cuts……. I guess the point of this being that I have purchased much “technology “ in the form of apps and others, mostly at 3 to 5 dollars a pop… only to find that I do not have the time or where with all to learn the basic principles necessary to use these things …. So I have many wonderful apps that sit dormant in my aging iphones. I use iPhones because my iPad is outdated to use most of them, and being retired and on fixed income and because of the money I have spent incrementally on apps and others,I can’t justify a new iPad…. But I think the most important message I would pass on to most younger people is…….You cannot purchase your way into sounding better, and if you don’t think you sound worthy in your own mind, it won’t matter how much equipment or technology you buy…. Your still not going to believe you sound good…..Millions of people have ,and are, going down the same rabbit hole that I have on occasion ,and many people are making money at the gate of that rabbit hole… if you don’t believe your “good enough” as a human being , your never going to believe your “ good enough” as a musician , no matter how much you learn or how much you buy… if you can’t sit in your room or out at the park by yourself and enjoy the music that you play, the best you will do is spend a lot of time trying to get “other esteem” (approval)from people that clap for you, rather than having enough esteem yourself to find joy in the very act of playing music.
God help you if you don’t believe in yourself but others are telling you your great, because you will find yourself constantly on the roller coaster of life believing after a particularly good show that you have finally cracked it, only to have a unreceptive crowd the next week and find yourself miserable and climbing back up the roller coaster hill again, and maybe worse of all,if your particularly unfortunate and get mass approval from others and yet hate yourself you risk becoming an “ ego maniac with low self esteem” which has the potential of leading to becoming an addict of one of the worst drug of all(fame)….I remember some years ago I was “playing” and singing in a duo and then band… I was a horrible guitar player and I kept buying different pedals and finally a giant 200watt crate amp( louder always sounded better to me😊… (which was even worse when Your playing in an acoustic duo act😊)and thinking that the problem was the equipment and never realizing that the problem was that I really didn’t know how to play guitar…. I suspect the other members tolerated it for a while because they liked the way I sang🤔😊….. anyway didn’t mean to babble on here but I really appreciate the time that you and others donate to help other people do a little better and I just wanted to pass on some things from UHK(university of hard knocks)…. God Bless
It's kind of depressing though. I prefer my posts about problems salted with at least a bit more solutions.
Yeah, I started up both Streambyter and Mozaic projects to try to approach this challenge. It just got too cumbersome and annoying. I even began to spec out an AU plugin approach with many to one mapping tables. In the end it just seemed like it would lead to never ending mapping exercises for pretty little gain.
