Rebel Strut: A Very Rough FL Studio Mobile Experiment (David Bowie Rhythm)

This is an instrumental track built in FL Studio Mobile.

Long story short: I've been interested in songbooks, bass and guitar tab books, scores and guitar licks. In Hal Leonard's book titled "Guitar Tab Method", I found David Bowie's iconic guitar lick for Rebel Rebel and have been obsessively (and I mean obsessively!) using its rhythm in various sequencing apps that allow me to do horrible things to it (such as displacing the rhythm, changing intervals, etc). In my random flailing around, I stumbled upon the combination of Rebel Rebel and the G Lydian scale and so here we are.

For this track, I ditched the sequencers and drew in the rhythm of the Bowie riff for the bassline using different pitches. How? I just played around until I liked what I heard. The rest was built around the bassline.

This track is a rough sketch which is why it's unlisted (how did you find it?). I haven't done much in terms of mixing, and I'm not even sure I like the guitar on it. It might end up being something more at some point in the future though!

Thanks for listening!

  • I like your idea of starting from an interesting rhythm and creating something new from that as an input.
