Cracking and crashing problem in Loopy Pro

I'm having a big problem working with Loopy Pro. My iPad Air 2023 with 7,5 GB of RAm is connected to an iRig sound card/keyboard and external screen, and my electric guitar is connected to that card as well.

I have several AUV3 files loaded and I'm playing guitar along with drum tracks, using Playbeat 4 and ChordJam. I'm using the Barak filter on the master output.

After working for a while, the app starts making a crackling sound until the most active app eventually shuts down, and I can't do anything about it.

Only restarting the iPad lets me work for a while again until it happens again. All the AUV3 files I'm not using are deactivated when I mute, so I don't have many things active at once.

When I check the RAM and CPU usage, it's around 70%, and the CPU usage is at 30%, assuming my Device Monitor app is reading correctly. My Loopy Pro settings are 44.1 kHz, 256 samples, and 24 bits.

What could be causing this?

That is very unusual. What do you mean by “ the most active app eventually shuts down, and I can't do anything about it. ”

Is Loopy Pro crashing? Plugins? Other apps?

I wanted to tell you that the app that's playing at that moment starts crashing with a cracking sound, then it freezes and loops, saying that the audio unit needs to be reloaded. Loopy por is not crashing. Maybe I should make a video and upload it, but I don't think I can do that here, right?

Upload the video to YouTube as unlisted or GoogleDrive or Dropbox and share a link

When you say “app” do you mean plugin or a separate app? That sounds like an issue with the plugin or app that is crashing.

Are there crashlogs for the crashed apps or plugins in the iOS Settings app in Analytics & Improvements?

  • Bark Filter. I get the same thing. It’s been unusable for me.

  • I was going to suggest removing one plugin at a time until you find the culprit, but it sounds like @timfromtheborder has already spotted the most likely place to start.

It's probably a good idea to have Loopy's per-app DSP meter window open to see what percentage of DSP is being taken up by each plugin. There's a lot of potential insight there.

I haven't done any comparison, but you might consider trying WOOTT as a substitute for Bark Filter if its the famous Tripleband preset that you're using. Wooot! can have a similar brute-force soundgoodizer effect as Tripleband, but it's also tamable.

Great! I will check all things you mention me!! Yes im using the triple band fx in the máster sección. How can i configure woott to sound similar?
One cuestión apart, If a pluguin is i active is consuming the same as off in loopy pro?

    Thanks for your help here!

Sorry, I don't know. You may have to experiment. It also may not work as a suitable replacement. It was just an idea. Tripleband is a kind of brute-force sound enhancer. Woott can have that same sort of kick in the pants kind of effect, but may be easier on resources.

Effects should consume no DSP resources if they are off. You can verify that with the per plugin CPU window, found by pressing on the little DSP % at the bottom-left.

  • I alredy buy Woott and great, in 5 minutes i find sobre similar punch sound of Barak Filter. I will investigate deeper in the next days!
I dont find the CPU Window in loopy pro! Can you tell me exact simbol or where to find it? Is in the mixer Page i suppouse..

    Ok great!
I check and play beat 4 takes 30 to 60% with pikcs of 80% of CPU. Its a Shame because i really love Play Beat 4 from Audiomodern.

I dont want to renunce to it.

I will work in it to see what can i do..

What buffer size are you using? Increasing the buffer size reduces the computational load.

    256

    You recomend me 512?

If you need to reduce the CPU load. Or make sure all unsed plugins are off.

It's time to start leveraging Loopy's plugin management by committing some of the Play Beat output to audio loops. What I mean is, once you have an output that you like from Play Beat 4, simply record that to a loop, then mute/idle Play Beat 4. You can always un-freeze it if you make changes or want to add parts. Do this regularly and you can go practically forever with Loopy Pro even on old hardware like my iPad 9th gen. This is more effective if you freeze the end result of the whole FX chain, but is helpful no matter how you go about it.
